SAN DIEGO – Trevor Hoffman, Major League Baseball’s all-time saves leader and a local sports icon in San Diego, has been named the Honorary Chairman of the 2011 Perfect Game All-American Classic presented by Rawlings.  In this role, Hoffman will serve as a spokesman for the game, help educate the players on the importance and value of the experience, and provide game-tested pointers to the players on both squads.

It’s wonderful to be a part of the Perfect Game All-American Classic, especially considering that it’s being played at PETCO and involves such talented high school players,” said Hoffman. “I look forward to helping celebrate their achievements and doing what I can to drive interest in the Classic.”

The Perfect Game All-American Classic presented by Rawlings will feature the nation’s top high school baseball players in the ninth annual baseball showcase, in an East versus West matchup. The game will be played Aug. 14 at 5 p.m. PDT at PETCO Park, home of the San Diego Padres, and will be nationally televised live on CBS Sports Network.

The Perfect Game All-American Classic is more than just a game. It is part of an ongoing commitment to the fight against childhood cancer, with ticket proceeds benefiting Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. Since 2003, the Perfect Game All-American Classic has generated nearly $675,000 for charity. Hoffman has been heavily involved in the local San Diego community and his addition as Honorary Chairman in the game is a big victory for all involved in raising funds for Rady Children’s.

Trevor is a great guy and a wonderful role model for the players in our game,” said David Gardiner President of Blue Ridge Sports & Entertainment. “His longevity, love for the sport and track record of excellence provide the resume we covet when we explore possibilities for this role. We’re lucky and grateful to have him on board.”

Previous Honorary Chairmen of the game include Cal Ripken Jr., Reggie Jackson, Andre Dawson and Ozzie Smith.

The Padres will retire Hoffman’s #51 in a pregame ceremony on August 21
