Tampa Jesuit remains in the top spot with their undefeated start, and fellow Florida school Gulliver Prep moves up to No. 4 as they have won eight straight.
Harvard-Westlake appeared to be invincible after cruising to a 2-0 start by a combined score of 13-0 in their first two games. But Valencia shattered that illusion, cruising to an 11-4 victory, beating the Wolverines’ No. 1a starter and potential first rounder Max Fried. Harvard-Westlake falls to No. 5, while Valencia moves up to No. 28 on the power of Trey Williams and AJ Balta.
The other SoCal preseason top five team, Mater Dei, dropped to 2-1 as well, after getting overpowered by Huntington Beach 9-1 on Monday. Mater Dei had an impressive opening day victory in the National Game of the Week against Bishop Amat (who falls to No. 21) and followed it up with a solid win against Gahr before the upset. Huntington Beach’s 3-0 start earned them their first berth in the National Top 50, debuting at No. 37.
After a busy week with season opening tournaments in Texas, the dust has finally settled. Corpus Christi’s twin powers Carroll and Calallen each continued to climb, moving up to Nos. 3 and 8 respectively. But the real shakeup came in the Houston area, where Klein Collins made a strong statement by going 5-0 to extend their winning streak to nine games. The Tigers move up to No. 18 this week, their highlight of the week came when they battled all the way back from a 3-0 first inning deficit to knock off SB Memorial (falls to No. 42 after a two loss week) by a 4-3 count. Jake Jarvis was the hero for the Tigers against Memorial, earning the win on the mound and hitting the go ahead Home Run.
The other change in the Lone Star state is the addition of 10-1 Flower Mound (debut at No. 36) after the Jaguars extended their winning streak to 10 games. Flower Mound knocked out Rockwall-Heath for the first time this season, as the Hawks dropped to 7-3 on the young season.
Oklahoma gets its second representative into the National Top 50, as Owasso, a staple of the top 10 in 2011, makes their 2012 debut at No. 41 after a 5-0 start. Edmond Santa Fe inches up a spot to No. 29 after winning their first two games.
Columbus (GA) makes a two spot jump into the top ten and takes on top Alabama program Russell County in our National Game of the Week on Wednesday. Olympia (FL) jumps five spots to No. 11 as they continue to roll thru Orlando area competition.
North Carolina schools got underway last week with Providence starting the year 3-0 and moving up to No. 16. Barbe (LA) has been one of the hotter teams in the country as they were bolstered last week by the return of SS Gavin Cecchini.
South Carolina gets underway this week with Virginia and Tennessee to follow the week of March 12.
