American Heritage moves into the top spot as the captured the 5A FHSAA title, first beating previous No. 1 Tampa Jesuit on a Brandon Diaz three run homerun in the eight inning and then beating Ponte Vedra 9-0 to win the title. Tampa Jesuit which had held the No. 1 spot for every week except one during the regular season drops to No. 5.

Fellow Florida state champions Archbishop McCarthy and Spruce Creek sit at No. 8 and No. 10 respectively.

Bishop Gorman (NV) cruised to a record seventh consecutive 4A Nevada state championship with an 11-1 win over Coronado in the 4A state championship game on Saturday. Gorman’s streak looked to be in jeopardy in the semifinals when Reno (NV) jumped out to a 6-1 lead, before falling victim to a furious Gorman comeback that saw the Gaels pull out a 7-6 victory. The Gaels move up a spot to No. 3 and will finish the season ranked in the top five in the nation yet again.

The opening round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs in California claimed a couple of victims from the rankings, but for the most part the favorites in California survived to this afternoon’s second round. The single elimination format combined with depth of talented teams typically leaves a trail of upsets throughout the bracket. There wasn’t a lot of movement from the Golden State this week with the exception of a few upset victims (Lakewood, Long Beach Wilson, Clovis West), but expect that to change drastically in the coming weeks.

Georgia playoffs are down to their final week with the teams sitting Nos. 11-13 (Columbus, Parkview, and Gainesville) all still alive. Ringgold, another AAA team, enters the rankings at No. 42.

Tomball (TX) moves up to No. 14 this week after a thrilling series victory over previously No. 50 Klein (TX), coming out on the winning end of one-run games in game one and three of the series.

The biggest jump this week comes from Arizona, where Chaparral captured a second consecutive state championship, moving up to No. 29.

New additions this week include: No. 33 Oxford (AL), No. 35 Rockwall-Heath (TX), No. 36 Pensacola Catholic (FL), No. 38 Carl Albert (OK), No. 42 Ringgold (GA), No. 45 Kentwood (WA), No. 46 Bingham (UT), No. 47 Jackson Memorial (NJ), No. 48 Grand Street Campus (NY), No. 49 Pacifica (CA) and No. 50 Piedra Vista (NM).
