The CIF Sectional championships saw one last shakeup as the season in baseball's top hotbed state of California came to an end last week. The big climber that came from championship weekend was No. 9 Cathedral Catholic, who rode the powerful left arm of Stephen Gonsalves in the title game. Gonsalves struck out eight in a complete game performance as Cathedral Catholic knocked off previously No. 17 ranked El Capitan in the San Diego Section Division III championship game 3-1. It was the third meeting of the season between the two teams, with El Capitan winning the championship game of the Hilltop-Lolitas Tournament before Cathedral Catholic took the championship game of the San Diego Lions Tournament in April. These two teams have now met in the championship game three years in a row, with El Capitan capturing the 2010 title and Cathedral Catholic winning the past two.
Other champions crowned in California who made jumps this week include Southern Section Division I champion No. 12 Newbury Park (CA), Central Coast Section Division II champion No. 18 Campolindo (CA), Southern Section Division II champion No. 28 Pacifica (CA) and Los Angeles Section Division I champion No. 47 El Camino Real (CA).
Lake Central (IN) moves up to No. 26 as they ran their record to 30-1 on the year. They take on Zionsville in Saturday's state semifinal with the state title the following weekend. Lyons (IL) is into the rankings at No. 49 as the Illinois state playoffs are down to the final weekend. Lyons takes on Minooka in one 4A semifinal while Fox Lake and Oak Park-River Forest battle in the other.
The state championship in Round Rock, TX is set for this weekend. No. 5 Corpus Christi Carroll looks to be the favorite in 5A and are led by first round pick OF/RHP Courtney Hawkins. Carroll will take on No. 34 A&M Consolidated in one 5A semifinal, while No. 19 Arlington Martin matches up with No. 39 Cypress Ranch in the other. In the 4A division No. 21 Rockwall-Heath is the favorite thanks in large part to the presence of second round draft pick RHP/1B Jake Thompson.
Moeller (OH) won another Division 1 state title and jumps into the rankings at No. 47, taking the place of Grove City who they beat 3-2 in the semifinals before beating Westlake 9-6 to win the title.
Moeller is added to a growing list of state champs.
