Fall report: TCU vs. Rice

Kendall Rogers
ROUND ROCK, Texas -- Rice and TCU are in different conferences, but even during the fall, it's always interesting when these two butt heads on the diamond.

The latest contest between the two elite programs was no different, as Rice used a surprising offensive onslaught to get past TCU in a 16-inning scrimmage at Dell Diamond.

For the Frogs, righthanded pitcher Andrew Mitchell and lefthander Brandon Finnegan were the primary stars. Mitchell topped out at 94 in a relief appearance, while Finnegan was a consistent and easy 92-93 with his fastball.

For the Owls, ace righthanded pitcher Austin Kubitza looked a lot more like his old self with good secondary stuff and a high 80s fastball, while newcomer Brian Harris gave the club something to smile about at the plate.

It's time to breakdown the contest between the Frogs and Owls, complete with notes, analysis and scouting reports on individual players.

RICE

* Though he's not listed on Rice's official roster, fans will soon know plenty about talented slugger Brian Smith. Smith, a late signee for the Owls, has an imposing frame and really hit the fastball well against the Horned Frogs. We'll see if he approaches secondary stuff as well in the spring, but it's so far so good for the Rice newcomer.
