I have to confess that the first time I saw Dominic Smith play he didn't leave a positive impression on me. The scene was the August, 2011 Area Code Games, where Smith was one of the few rising juniors at an event that is almost exclusively rising seniors. He hit from an absurdly open and casual batting stance, played both the outfield and first base with a combination of flair and what I then saw as disrespectful nonchalance and generally acted, in my eyes, like he wanted everyone’s attention for the wrong reasons.

When a couple of Southern California area scouts told me that week that Smith was going to be a first round draft pick in two years, I’m sure my outward response was polite scout talk while my inner thoughts were, “Are you crazy?!”

Boy, was I wrong. Completely wrong on all accounts.
