Big league relievers who have had statistical success as closers are not as rare as some in the game would have you believe. Closers have come and gone who have racked up high save totals over short, or even long periods of time. In spite of impressive statistics and save totals, however, many of these closers are easily forgotten and not necessarily judged as elite performers. Why? Closers are judged on the situations they are placed in and how they stand up to the adversity and gravity of those situations.

This principle is why we view Mariano Rivera and Trevor Hoffman very differently. Of course, we don’t have have events on par with the World Series to judge amateur relief pitchers on. But, if we are attempting to grade a potential future closer, it sure does help to have some approximation of how well they hold up in these late game situations.
