TEAM OF THE DAY
Cal State Fullerton: The Titans just continue to play at an extremely high level. Freshman right-handed pitcher Justin Garza struck out four batters and allowed just two runs on six hits in eight innings of work in a 5-2 triumph over Oregon to take the series. Also worth noting, electric Fullerton outfielder Michael Lorenzen went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs.
PLAYER OF THE DAY
Carlos Rodon, LHP, So., North Carolina State: Rodon might not have earned a decision in a 2-1 win over Florida Atlantic, but what an amazing performance he put together against the Owls. Rodon struck out 16 batters, walked three and allowed just a run on two hits in seven innings of work. He also threw 110 pitches, 70 for strikes.
UPSET OF THE DAY
Arizona State over Arkansas: This isn't exactly a monumental upset, but the Sun Devils have gotten the best of the Razorbacks twice over the past few days. ASU freshman left-handed pitcher Ryan Kellogg struck out three batters and allowed just one run on six hits in six innings of work, as the Sun Devils captured an impressive 3-1 win over the Hogs.
Teams feeling good
Indiana: The Hoosiers have a solid club this season, and starting pitcher Joey DeNato again had a solid performance in a 9-1 win over Coastal Carolina. DeNato struck out three batters and allowed a run on five hits in 7 1/3 innings of work. He did walk five batters, while shortstop Michael Basil again had a productive performance at the plate, recording four hits, two runs scored and two RBIs.
Clemson: The Tigers have several young players to watch the rest of the season, and it's time to add starting pitcher Clate Schmidt to the list. The talented right-hander struck out five, walked three and allowed just two runs on five hits in seven innings of work in a 6-3 win over rival South Carolina. Meanwhile, outfielder Steven Duggar led the charge at the plate with two hits and two RBIs.
Mississippi: The Rebels hit the road this weekend for a tough series against FIU, but have performed admirably, winning the series on Saturday with an 8-3 triumph. Ole Miss right-handed pitcher Mike Mayers struck out six and allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings of work, while leadoff hitter Tanner Mathis had two hits and an RBI.
Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets are playing an outstanding brand of baseball so far this season with outfielder Daniel Palka and others leading the charge. Palka went 2-for-3 with a home run, a run scored and four RBIs in a dominant 11-2 win over Rutgers. Meanwhile, starting pitcher Dusty Isaacs struck out six, walked two and allowed a run on eight hits in six innings.
Notre Dame: Notre Dame talented starting pitcher Adam Norton struck out five, walked one and allowed just four hits in a complete game shutout performance in a 3-0 win over hard-hitting Virginia Tech. Norton threw 108 pitches, 76 for strikes. The Fighting Irish now are sitting pretty with an 8-1 record.
Stanford: The Cardinal clinched a solid series win on Saturday as leadoff hitter Austin Slater recorded two hits and two RBIs in a 7-2 win over Texas. Stanford pieced together some good innings on the mound with John Hochstatter and Daniel Starwalt combining to throw 6 1/3 shutout innings in the victory.
Tulane: Despite dealing with some serious injuries, the Green Wave hit the road and recorded a huge series win over Alabama with a 6-2 triumph. Tulane starting pitcher Alex Byo struck out six batters and allowed just two runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings of work. Meanwhile, first baseman Sean Potkay hit a home run and recorded three hits and four RBIs.
Texas A&M: The Aggies dropped the Astros College Classic opener to Houston, but bounced back on Saturday with an 8-3 win over Rice. A&M right-handed pitcher Daniel Mengden struck out eight batters and allowed three runs in eight innings, while leadoff hitter Mikey Reynolds recorded three hits and knocked in a run.
Teams wanting a do-over
New Mexico: Lobos starting pitcher A.J. Carman tossed four shutout frames against Nebraska, but the bullpen was unable to take care of business in an 8-5 loss to Nebraska. Despite the setback to the Huskers, third baseman DJ Peterson smacked his third home run of the season.
California: It's safe to say the Golden Bears haven't played particularly well at the Astros Foundation Classic so far this weekend. Cal dropped an 11-5 decision to North Carolina in a contest that simply wasn't that close. Bears starting pitcher Jake Schulz allowed eight runs on eight hits in only 3 2/3 innings.
Ohio State: The Buckeyes are having a tough weekend thus far, dropping a 3-2 decision to struggling Stetson on Saturday. OSU starting pitcher Brad Goldberg put together a solid start, while reliever Brett McKinney tossed five shutout innings out of the bullpen. The Bucks just were unable to win the contest in extra innings.
Baylor: The Bears had a tough performance against Houston on Saturday, dropping a 15-4 decision in an ugly contest. BU starting pitcher Austin Stone was lifted after just an inning, while the pitching staff as a whole walked 14 batters. BU also committed three errors.
Top individual performers
Scott Sitz, RHP, Sr., Florida State: The talented right-handed pitcher has been very solid this season, adding to his campaign Saturday with a good performance in a win over Villanova. Sitz struck out nine, walked one and allowed just three hits in six shutout innings.
Jacob Noble, LHP, Jr., South Alabama: Noble has caught people's attention so far this season with a plus 90s fastball. He pitched well again Saturday in a 3-0 win over College of Charleston. Noble struck out eight batters, walked one and allowed just three hits in 7 1/3 innings of work. He threw 107 pitches, 69 for strikes.
Adam Nelubowich, OF, Jr., Washington State: The Cougars are off to an impressive start this season, and Nelubowich was very productive in Saturday's win over Cal State Northridge. He went 3-for-4 with a home run, a run scored and three RBIs.
Trey Masek, RHP, Jr., Texas Tech: The Red Raiders might not yet be a complete team, but you certainly can't blame Masek, He again was fantastic in a start, striking out 12 batters and allowing six hits in a complete game shutout against LaSalle. Masek was up to 93 in the ninth inning of his start, throwing 117 pitches, 84 for strikes.
Caleb Adams, OF, So., Louisiana-Lafayette: The Ragin' Cajuns are off to an impressive 10-2 start this spring, and Adams had a huge day in an 8-2 win over Sacred Heart. He went 3-for-4 with three homers, three runs scored and five RBIs.
Evan Hill, LHP, Fr., Michigan: Hill certainly had some command issues at times, but was very solid in an 11-0 win over Saint Louis. Hill struck out four batters and allowed just two hits in six shutout innings of work.
Kyle Convissar, DH, Jr., Maryland: The Terrapins did a clean doubleheader sweep of Princeton on Saturday with Convissar and others leading the charge. Convissar finished the day with an amazing total of seven hits and six RBIs.
Dylan Covey, RHP, Jr., San Diego: The Toreros picked up a very good win over UNC Wilmington on Saturday with Covey leading the charge. Covey struck out 12 batters, walked two and allowed just five hits in six shutout innings of work.
Devin Wenzel, 3B, Fr., Cincinnati: Wenzel couldn't have had a much better day in a 17-3 win over New York Tech. Wenzel went 3-for-6 with two runs scored, a home run and six RBIs.
