Florida State
Seminoles talented right-handed pitcher Luke Weaver was up to 93 with his fastball, as his club captured an impressive 4-1 win over reeling rival Florida. Weaver struck out five batters, walked two and allowed just one run (none earned) on three hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. Meanwhile, shortstop Giovanny Alfonzo led the offense with two hits and two RBIs.
Player of the day
Hunter Renfroe, OF, Jr., Mississippi State
The Bulldogs recorded another impressive win, this time over in-state rival Southern Mississippi. Renfroe had a huge night at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and six RBIs. He also induced a walk.
Upset of the day
Illinois State over Miami
The Redbirds hit the road and captured an impressive 17-6 win over Miami. Outfielder Chad Hinshaw went 4-for-6 with a home run, three runs scored and four RBIs, while first baseman Kyle Stanton had a home run, two hits and four RBIs, and second baseman Brock Stewart had two hits and five RBIs.
Feeling good
UNC Wilmington: The Seahawks had a night to remember in a 7-3 win over Elon. Wilmington catcher Drew Farber smacked a home run in the game, while third baseman Ryan LaGrange went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, as the Seahawks notched win No. 700 for long-time head coach Mark Scalf.
Memphis: You can go ahead and call the Tigers the SEC killers for now. The Tigers improved their record to 5-0 against the mighty SEC on Tuesday, as they captured an impressive 6-0 win over Alabama. Memphis junior left-handed pitcher Alex Gunn struck out four, walked one and allowed just three hits in seven shutout frames in the winning cause.
UC Santa Barbara: After a rough showing over the weekend down in Texas, the Gauchos responded in a big way on Tuesday with a 7-2 win over Notre Dame. UCSB starting pitcher Greg Mahle struck out six and allowed just a hit in four scoreless frames, while imposing first baseman Tyler Kuresa went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Gauchos past the Irish.
Georgia: The Bulldogs finally are playing with some confidence these days. They appeared to be in trouble in the middle innings against Appalachian State, but rallied for seven runs their final two at-bats to win the contest 9-4. Catcher Brett DeLoach led the offensive charge for the Bulldogs, going 2-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs.
Mississippi State: The combination of USM struggling and the Bulldogs not real happy after losing the weekend series to Central Arkansas didn't exactly spell a good result for Golden Eagles starting pitcher Mason Robbins, who allowed four runs on four hits, not escaping the first inning. MSU outfielder Hunter Renfroe led the charge at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and six RBIs.
Oklahoma State: It was thought it might take some time for the Cowboys to start winning under coach Josh Holliday, but the plan already is coming to fruition. OSU ran its record to 13-3 on the season Tuesday night with an 11-3 win over Pacific. Cowboys leadoff hitter Gage Green had a great night at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a home run, a run scored and four RBIs.
Arkansas: The Razorbacks didn't get a great performance from freshman pitcher Colin Poche, but stepped up offensively with designated hitter Isaac Hellbusch going 2-for-5 with a home run, a run scored and five RBIs, while outfielder Brian Anderson went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBIs.
San Francisco: Sophomore left-handed pitcher Christian Cecilio struck out four, walked one and allowed just one hit in four shutout frames, while Haden Hinkle and Adam Cimber were terrific in relief, as the Dons defeated previously undefeated Oregon State 5-1.
Georgia Southern: It sure takes a special performance to knock Mercer off its perch, and that's exactly what GSU got in Tuesday's 10-8 win over the Bears. Catcher Chase Griffin went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while third baseman Brent Pugh added a pair of doubles in the contest.
Teams wanting a do-over
Miami: The Hurricanes have really struggled with consistency so far this season, and that didn't change Tuesday night in a disappointing 17-6 loss to Illinois State. UM starting pitcher Eric Whaley allowed five runs on eight hits in two innings. ISU got a huge offensive performance by outfielder Chad Hinshaw, who went 4-for-6 with a home run, three runs scored and four RBIs.
Long Beach State: It's safe to say the Dirtbags are in some big trouble at this point in the season, as they sit with a 6-11 overall record following a 4-1 loss to Loyola Marymount. LBSU starting pitcher Nick Sabo allowed three runs on five hits in four innings, while LMU starting pitcher Patrick McGrath allowed just a run on three hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Baylor: The Bears have really struggled over the past week, and that trend didn't change on Tuesday in a tough 5-3 loss to Houston. BU freshman pitcher Sterling Wynn had a tough night, allowing five runs on five hits in two innings of work. Meanwhile, the UH duo of Aaron Garza and Dylan Ducker were able to hold down the Bears' offense.
Troy: If there's one thing coach Bobby Pierce is still a little concerned about this season, it's his midweek pitching. Trojans starting pitcher Ryan Brady allowed two runs on three hits in just 2/3 innings of work, while UAB's pitching staff performed at a high level and surprisingly held Troy's Danny Collins to an 0-for-4 night.
Best individual performances
Ty Nichols, RHP, Fr., Sacramento State: The talented freshman right-hander struck out four and allowed just two hits in six shutout frames as the Hornets captured a 10-0 win over St. Mary's.
Luke Weaver, RHP, So., Florida State: Weaver flashed big-tim stuff in the win over rival Florida. Weaver was consistently 90-93 with his fastball against the Gators. He also struck out five, walked two and allowed just one run on three hits in 6 1/3 innings of work.
John Simms, RHP, Jr., Rice: The Owls have moved Simms back to the bullpen on the weekend, meaning he will serve as the midweek starter moving forward. Simms was terrific in a 4-2 win over Louisiana Tech. He struck out 12, walked four and allowed just two runs on five hits in a complete game performance.
Cody Maerz, RHP, Fr., Murray State: The Racers couldn't have gotten a much better performance from the righty, who struck out seven and allowed just one hit in five shutout innings in a 7-1 win over Northern Illinois.
Jake Peter, 2B, So., Creighton: The Bluejays pounded Southeaster Missouri State 17-2 with Peter leading the charge. He went 3-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored and three RBIs.
Jeff Kemp, SS, Sr., Radford: Kemp had a huge day at the plate as the Highlanders swept a doubleheader from Iona. Kemp went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI in the first game, while he had a double and an RBI in the nightcap against the Gaels.
Jake Doller, RHP, Sr., Kansas State: The Wildcats picked up an important midweek win over Northern Illinois with Doller leading the way. He struck out six, walked one and allowed just one hit in seven shutout innings. He threw 93 pitches, 64 for strikes.
Tanner McIntyre, RHP, Sr., Virginia Tech: Tech finished the Georgia Tech series with a win, and continued its winning ways with a 6-1 triumph over Charlotte. McIntyre struck out two, walked three and allowed two hits in six shutout frames.
National notes
* UCLA freshman right-handed pitcher James Kaprielian should be back on the mound next weekend against California, says Bruins coach John Savage. Savage said an MRI on Kaprielian showed no damage. His return is huge for UCLA, as the righty has a 3.00 ERA in three innings with two saves.
* Auburn veteran left-handed pitcher Will Kendall missed much of last season because of arm surgery, but returned to the hill Tuesday night against Kennesaw State. He struck out two and allowed just one hit in an inning of work. Kendall was in the upper 80s with his fastball, along with a plus changeup.
* Kentucky junior right-handed pitcher Trevor Gott has had quite an impressive career out of the bullpen. Well, he made UK history on Tuesday with his 16th career save in a 6-3 win over Ohio. Gott struck out a batter and recorded the final two outs of the game. For the season, Gott has yet to allow a run in nine innings.
* UNC Wilmington coach Mark Scalf made some program and college baseball history on Tuesday, as the Seahawks defeated Elon for win No. 700 in his career. Scalf currently is in his 21st season as the head coach at UNCW.
* Florida has had an abnormal number of setbacks so far this season, and the Gators' woes continued on Tuesday. In addition to the loss to rival Florida State, UF will be without pitcher Keenan Kish the rest of the season. Kish had appeared in three games prior to his injury.
* Texas A&M head coach Rob Childress earned win No. 300 in his coaching career on Tuesday, as the Aggies captured a come-from-behind win over Houston Baptist. Childress is in his eighth season with the Aggies, guiding the program to a school-record six-straight NCAA postseason berths in the process.
