Oregon State (19-1)

The Beavers had yet another outstanding weekend, beating Arizona 8-4 to capture an important road series sweep. OSU starting pitcher Ben Wetzler had a solid performance, while hard-hitting outfielder Michael Conforto continued his impressive ways with a home run, two hits and an RBI. It also should be noted that catcher Jake Rodriguez had two hits and a career-high five RBIs.

Upset of the day

Presbyterian over Connecticut
The Huskies had a weekend to forget down in the Palmetto State, dropping a series to Presbyterian College with a 5-4 loss on Sunday. UCONN starting pitcher Brian Ward allowed just a run on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings of work, but the bullpen was unable to take care of business in the losing cause.

Player of the day

DJ Peterson, 3B, Jr., New Mexico
The Lobos picked up a huge road series over UNLV with Peterson and others leading the charge. Peterson went 3-for-5 with a pair of homers, three runs scored and eight RBIs in the winning cause. Peterson now has 10 homers on the season.


Teams feeling good

Kentucky (16-3): The Wildcats put together a solid rest of the weekend against Florida after dropping the series opener. UK left-handed pitcher Corey Littrell struck out seven and allowed just a run on 10 hits in eight innings of work, as the Wildcats captured a 6-2 win over the Gators. Meanwhile, catcher Michael Thomas had a home run in the contest.

North Carolina (18-1): Talented right-handed pitcher Hobbs Johnson struck out seven, walked three and allowed just a run on three hits in five innings, as the Tar Heels captured a 4-1 win over Miami. Meanwhile, the bullpen also performed at a high level with relievers Trevor Kelley and Chris McCue each putting together impressive outings.

Texas A&M (14-7): The Aggies couldn't have put together a more impressive first weekend in the SEC, sweeping Georgia with an 11-4 victory in the series finale on Sunday. A&M third baseman Blake Allemand led the offensive charge with a home run, two hits and three RBIs, while first baseman Cole Lankford had a home run and three hits.

Virginia Tech (16-5): Hokies talented senior left-handed pitcher Joe Mantiply was solid in his return to the bump, allowing just two runs on six hits in five innings of work, while reliever Clark Labitan struck out four and allowed just three hits in four shutout frames in a 6-2 win over Duke to solidify the series sweep. The win was coach Pete Hughes' 500th of his career.

Georgia Tech (17-2): Yellow Jackets right-handed pitcher Cole Pitts struck out four, walked three and allowed just a run on three hits in 6 2/3 innings, as the Jackets captured a 9-1 win over Boston College to claim a series sweep. While Pitts led the charge on the mound, catcher Zane Evans capped off a huge weekend with two hits and three RBIs.

Virginia (17-2): The Cavaliers captured their most impressive series win to date with an 8-5 win Sunday afternoon over Clemson. UVa. starting pitcher Nick Howard struck out three, walked one and allowed just two runs on seven hits in six innings of work, while Jared King led the charge at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and three RBIs.

Texas Tech (14-8): Red Raiders starting pitcher Matt Withrow didn't have a great start, allowing two runs on three hits in two innings of work. However, relievers Jonny Drozd and Jerad McCrummen rose to the occasion. Drozd, who has made a name for himself with strong midweek performances, allowed just four hits in 5 1/3 shutout frames, while McCrummen struck out three in 1 2/3 innings. The series win was Tech's first over Texas in Austin since 2001.

Vanderbilt (19-2): Commodores freshman outfielder Rhett Wiseman went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a walk, as the 'Dores captured an impressive 8-6 win over Auburn to sweep an important three-game set. Meanwhile, leadoff hitter Tony Kemp went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Western Carolina (12-8): The Catamounts have struggled at times this season, but they're off to a nice start in the Southern Conference with a 4-2 record after taking a road series from College of Charleston with a 10-6 win on Sunday. Jacob Hoyle went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while Julian Ridings and Tyler White each had two hits and two RBIs.

Mississippi (20-2): The Rebels scored a pair of runs in the top of the 13th inning to beat Arkansas 6-4 to claim an important SEC three-game set. Rebels starting pitcher Sam Smith, still starting in place of Chris Ellis, allowed just a run on three hits in five innings of work, while reliever Tanner Bailey was fantastic, striking out nine and allowing just five hits in 5 1/3 shutout frames.

Georgia Southern (12-7): It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that Rodney Hennon has his Eagles off to a hot start this season. Georgia Southern starting pitcher Josh Stevenson allowed just one earned run on four hits in five innings, while reliever Kyle Rowe threw 2 2/3 scoreless frames in a 6-3 win over Samford.


Teams wanting a do-over

UNLV (15-5): Rebels starting pitcher John Richy shined last weekend against Stanford, but struggled in a tough 12-7 loss to New Mexico. Richy allowed eight runs (six earned) on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings, while reliever Bryan Bonnell didn't do much better, allowing four runs on six hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Fresno State (4-14): What a tough campaign the Bulldogs have had so far this season. They dropped yet another tough series, losing 4-2 to San Diego State on Sunday. Fresno starting pitcher William Munro allowed just three runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings, the Bulldogs weren't able to do much against SDSU starting pitcher Ryan Doran and the Aztecs bullpen.

Arizona State (12-4): It's safe to say the Sun Devils had a weekend to forget against Washington State. Starting pitcher Adam McCreery allowed six runs on three hits in three innings of work, as the Devils dropped a tough 11-8 decision and the series to the Cougars.

Wichita State (11-8): The Shockers had hoped to hit the road and earn a huge road series win over Long Beach State. However, starting pitcher A.J. Ladwig allowed five runs on eight hits in four innings of work in a 5-4 loss to drop the series. WSU knocked Long Beach State starting pitcher David Hill out of the game after third innings, but LBSU's bullpen was able to get into a groove.

Tennessee (10-9): The Volunteers didn't finish the weekend at Alabama in impressive fashion, dropping a tough 15-1 bout in the series finale. UT starting pitcher Andy Cox allowed five runs on three hits and didn't get out of the first inning, while the offense was unable to do much against Alabama starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull, who allowed just a run on nine hits in seven innings of work.

TCU (8-11): Horned Frogs sophomore left-handed pitcher Brandon Finnegan struck out seven, walked two and allowed just five hits in 6 2/3 shutout innings, but the Frogs were unable to do much offensively against Kansas in a 2-0 setback. The Frogs left nine runners on base.


Best individual performances

Derek Umphres, 3B/SS, Fr., New Mexico State: Umphres certainly had a day to remember against Alabama A&M, going 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and five RBIs to lead the Aggies to a dominant 30-3 victory.

Grant Watson, LHP, So., UCLA: The talented left-handed pitcher tossed a gem in a win over Washington. Watson struck out three, walked one and allowed just four hits in six shutout innings of work. He threw 95 pitches, 60 for strikes.

Skye Bolt, OF, Fr., North Carolina: Bolt is having an impressive freshman campaign for the Tar Heels, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a run scored and three RBIs in a huge home series win over Miami. Bolt is hitting .418 with four homers and 20 RBIs.

Kendall Graveman, RHP, Sr., Mississippi State: Looking for a win over LSU this weekend, the Bulldogs relied on Graveman to get the job done. He didn't disappoint, striking out four, walking three and allowing just a run on seven hits in six innings of work.

Jason Monda, OF, Jr., Washington State: The Cougars had an impressive showing against Arizona State over the weekend with Monda and others leading the charge. Monda went 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs.

Kevin McCanna, RHP, Fr., Rice: McCanna put together an impressive performance as the Owls took care of business 12-0 against Harvard. McCanna, who has good velocity on his fastball, only struck out one batter, but also only allowed one hit in seven shutout frames.

Mike Tauchman, OF, Sr., Bradley: The Braves picked up an important win over Lipscomb with Tauchman leading the way. He went 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs. He also induced two walks in the contest.

Thomas Taylor, RHP, Sr., Kansas: Taylor put together an impressive start in a 2-0 win over TCU to capture a Big 12 series win. Taylor struck out just one batter, but also allowed just four hits in seven shutout frames. He threw 90 pitches, 54 for strikes.

Brett Houseal, RHP, Sr., Marist: The talented senior right-handed pitcher was fantastic in a 1-0 win over Villanova. He struck out six, walked two and allowed just four hits in seven shutout innings of work.

Chris Lewis, DH, Fr., Sacramento State: The Hornets captured an impressive 13-7 win over UC Santa Barbara with Lewis leading the way. He went 3-for-6 with a double, three runs scored and four RBIs to help the winning cause.

Kyle Hunter, LHP, Sr., Dartmouth: The Big Green is off to an impressive 6-0 start with Hunter leading the charge. The talented left-hander struck out four, walked one and allowed just seven hits in six shutout innings.

Jonathan Dziedzic, LHP, Jr., Lamar: The talented left-handed pitcher is having a solid campaign. He struck out eight, walked three and allowed just five hits in seven innings of work in a 6-0 win over Texas Pan-American. He threw 104 pitches, 70 for strikes.

Brad Elwood, 2B, So., Charlotte: Elwood couldn't have had a much better performance in a 14-4 win over Siena. The talented sophomore went 4-for-6 with a double, two homers, three runs scored and four RBIs to lead the offensive charge.

Andrew Morales, RHP, Jr., UC Irvine: The veteran right-handed pitcher tossed an absolute gem in the win over the Huskers. He struck out six, walked two and allowed just four hits in 7 2/3 innings of work. He also threw 96 pitches, 64 for strikes.
