College Field of 64: May 15

  • First things first in this week's projections, fans are always interested to see which conferences had the most bids, and in what order. Well, here's the breakdown this week: SEC (8), ACC (8), Sun Belt (4), Big East (4), Pac-12 (4), Big 10 (3), Big West (3), Big 12 (3), WCC (3), Big South (2), CAA (2), Conference USA (2). The rest of the conferences, including the Atlantic Sun, which appeared to be a possible three-bid league a few weeks ago, have just one postseason bid.

  • The race for the final couple of NCAA Regional host sites is rather interesting to say the least. This week, Arizona State and Arkansas have the final two host spots, but those are far from certain at this point, and the next two weeks could change the game. With that said, let's analyze those two teams, and some others in the mix.

    Arkansas: The Razorbacks have one of the more intriguing situations we've seen in a few seasons. The Hogs, on the surface, don't seem like a host-worthy team with an RPI of 44. However, the rest of their resume is host-worthy. For instance, the Hogs are clearly third in the SEC with an impressive 17-9 league mark. Additionally, they're 7-7 vs. RPI Top 25, 13-10 vs. RPI Top 50 and 16-15 vs. RPI Top 100. As of now, the NCAA committee would have to determine what's more important: Being third in the SEC, or having an RPI of 44?

    Arizona State: Just a year removed from a postseason ban, the Sun Devils are potentially in the mix nail down a host spot with a strong finish the final two weekends of the regular season. ASU still has work to do to feel very secure, though. The big thing working against ASU right now is the fact the Pac-12 only has four at-large bids with Stanford and Arizona continuing to struggle. That means, as of now, the NCAA Selection Committee, we're predicting, would give the league host sites to all four teams in the postseason. With that said, the Sun Devils have a solid resume. They're 17 in the latest NCAA RPI, they have a 14-10 league mark, and they're 5-4 vs. RPI Top 25, 7-4 vs. RPI Top 50 and 17-9 vs. RPI Top 100.

    Two more to watch: Keep close tabs on Kansas State and South Alabama this week and in their respective conference tournaments, as both have curious cases. The Wildcats lead the Big 12, have an impressive overall record and are 22 in the latest RPI. However, the Wildcats don't have an overly impressive resume with no wins vs. RPI Top 25, 6-8 mark vs. RPI Top 50 clubs and 20-12 vs. RPI Top 100. In KSU's case, the committee could decide to far outweigh Big 12 results vs. overall postseason resume. As for the Jaguars, they have representation on the committee and lead the Sun Belt with an impressive overall record. Resume-wise, the Jaguars are 0-2 vs. RPI Top 25, 6-8 vs. RPI Top 50 and 13-11 vs. RPI Top 100.

  • We're liking how the top eight national seeds stack up right now, but if things change, some teams to keep an eye on include North Carolina State, South Carolina, and possibly even Clemson if the Tigers can take a road series over Florida State this weekend. The Wolfpack certainly took a step back over the weekend with a home series loss to FSU. However, they still have a solid overall resume with an 11-8 mark vs. RPI Top 25, 18-10 mark vs. RPI Top 50 and 22-12 record vs. RPI Top 100. Meanwhile, South Carolina has an RPI of 11 with a 4-7 record vs. RPI Top 25, 10-10 mark vs. RPI Top 50 and 20-12 record vs. RPI Top 100. Then there's Clemson, which has an 8-10 record vs. RPI Top 25, 17-12 vs. RPI Top 50 and 21-13 vs. RPI Top 100. Something to think about here as we move forward, too, is the fact the NCAA Selection Committee is likely to only give the ACC three national seeds, not a potential fourth at this point.

  • Here are some interesting RPI moves in this week's NCAA Official RPI: Up -- Auburn (+22 to 28), Campbell (+11, 29), Seton Hall (+8, 34), Florida Atlantic (+10, 47), Creighton (+26, 48), Sam Houston State (+14, 51), Bryant (+19, 69), Memphis (+25, 85), Down -- Michigan State (-10, 38), Notre Dame (-11, 42), Alabama (-11, 43), Rice (-9, 46), Central Arkansas (-32, 75), West Virginia (-18, 86).
