MLB Draft Preview: Delaware

Delaware State-by-State List

A state like Delaware is always going to be dependent on its major universities for most of the strength of it’s draft class, in this case being Delaware and Delaware State. Both teams are strong in the win-loss department in 2013, and Delaware is particularly strong in the draft prospect department. They have two players in Jimmy Yezzo and Chad Kuhl who could go off the board in the top 7-8 rounds. Yezzo, in particular, is making a major push this spring to make his way into the top five rounds.

The state also has the benefit of having a group two high school player, which they don’t always have year-to-year. Jake Fraley provides the athleticism and strong left-handed swing that should land him some early round attention. For a small state, it’s a solid early round crop they can be proud of.

1. JIMMY YEZZO, 3b/1b, University of Delaware (Jr.)
With his monstrous performance this spring, Jimmy Yezzo has essentially forced his way to the front of the draft class in Delaware. He’s having among the best offensive seasons of any player in the country, hitting a whopping .419 through 50 games, swatting 12 home runs and 25 doubles along the way. The former Bishop Eustace standout has shown middle of the field power and outstanding lift in his swing throughout the spring, forcing his way into the minds of scouts. The 6-foot, 200-pound Yezzo fits into a likely first base profile, and will be drafted primarily on the strength of his left-handed bat. He’s shown the ability to go deep to any part of the park, and is particularly prolific to the opposite field, and has the advanced plate discipline to go along with that above average power. His huge summer in the Valley League last summer, in which he hit 16 home runs, put him on the map – but following it up with this spring should solidify his track record of hitting enough to put him in the top five rounds in June.
