The 2013 draft class is a crop full of high risk talent with tools to spare. There are plenty of athletes like Austin Wilson, Aaron Judge, and JaCoby Jones to choose from, and plenty of teams are going to be willing to select those types of players. Then, there are the safer, albeit lower upside, bets like Virginia Tech’s Chad Pinder. Fans don’t like the sound of the word “safe” when it comes to their team’s draft picks, but the reality is that there’s a great deal of merit in taking a player that your scouting staff feels is a safe bet to become a solid big league regular.
