Virginia entered the 2014 college baseball season atop the Perfect Game College Top 25 and remains there after the first weekend of action.

Though the Cavaliers began the season with a tough and surprisingly large loss to Kentucky, they bounced back in impressive fashion the rest of the weekend, besting Virginia Military and UNC Wilmington, and outscoring the two clubs by a combined 19-2.

While No’s 2, 3 and 4 stayed the same with Cal State Fullerton, Oregon State and Florida State each taking care of business over the weekend, previously No. 5 Indiana wasn’t so lucky. The Hoosiers struggled to open the season, losing three of four games on the road to Texas Tech, which enters this week’s rankings as one of the “next five” to watch moving forward.

Indiana, given the fact it was the first weekend of the season, didn’t have an insanely large drop, moving from No. 5 to No. 10, but some others, such as Mississippi State, which entered the top five this week, and South Carolina, UCLA, Oregon and Vanderbilt benefited from the drop.

Vanderbilt moved up two spots following a very impressive showing in a sweep over Long Beach State over the weekend, while North Carolina State, which went 0-1 over the weekend against Canisius, dropped just one spot from No. 10 to No.11.

Meanwhile, in other notables, the rest of the teams 10-20 remained the same, while Kansas State (22) and Texas (25) each dropped from the rankings. The Wildcats went 0-3 against Cal Poly over the weekend, while the Longhorns went 2-2 against California on the road.

The Wildcats and Longhorns, respectively, were replaced by Cal Poly and Kentucky. The Mustangs enter the rankings at No. 22, while the Wildcats narrowly made it to the top 25, coming in at No. 25.

The Perfect Game College Top 25 is released each Monday morning during the season.
