California outfielder Derek Hill told Perfect Game’s Matt Rodriguez in
an article written at the 2013 Perfect Game National Showcase that his favorite players were Torii Hunter and Adam Jones. That’s very fitting, as Hunter won nine consecutive American League Rawlings Gold Gloves for his defensive excellence from 2001 to 2009. Jones joined him as a Gold Glove winner in 2009 and has since added two additional awards in 2012 and 2013.

Hill was given the Rawlings Defensive Player of the Year Award in a ceremony the evening before the 2013 Perfect Game All-American Classic symbolizing the top defensive player in the 2014 high school class. His catch in the right-center field alley at the National Showcase (see video below) may have been the defensive play of the summer across the country. YouTube is full of videos of similar catches that Hill has made in high school games back in Sacramento.
