Speedy infielder Trevont Johnson (Atlanta, GA) was the offensive standout for Royal on Tuesday. The left handed hitter showed surprising power when he turned on a fellow lefty's fastball and drove it hard down the right field line for a home run. Johnson also had a single and scored a second run.
We were glad to see IF Jorge Gutierrez (Sugar Land, TX) come back Tuesday with a strong game on both sides of the ball. Gutierrez was smoked in the cheek by a bad hop ground ball Monday but check out OK after the game. He had a couple of quality at bats Tuesday, including a hard hit single and a stolen base.
3B Ezekiel Bear (Cypress, TX) was one of the stronger underclassman in San Diego and showed good hitting skills to go with his strength, staying back well on a curveball and driving it for a hit and picking up a second hit on a rocket up the middle.
Another big power hitter, C Herbert Iser (Miami, FL), showed the same ability to stay back on secondary stuff, lining a hard top spin single to right field off a change up left up in the zone.
SS/RHP Josh Lowe (Marietta, GA) came to the event listed as a primary middle infielder but we suspect that his Florida State commitment is based more on his ceiling on the mound. The 6-foot-3, 185 pound Lowe threw two innings, sitting consistently at 87-89 mph with a clean delivery and a very low effort release that promises more velocity in the future. His 80 mph slider and 82 mph change up flashed good quality as well.
