BP Highlights: Orange

6/12/2014

OF Danny Blair (Bel Air, MD) showed a smooth efficient swing, shifting his weight through contact with good extension and landing softly on his front foot. He showed surprising power from a short smooth line drive swing that generates solid bat speed.

SS Xavier LeGrant (Charlotte, NC) showed the fastest hands on the Orange team, firing them well with precise timing to consistently square up hard line drives back up the middle. While he lacks the present physical strength and approach to hit for significant power, his swing should carry over well into games and allow him to hit for a high average, even against the nation's top pitching prospects.

IF Logan Tolbert (Piedmont, SC) generated good bat speed with his long uppercut swing and is showing the makings of big power. As he begins to fill out his long lean frame he should begin to realize that power potential.

OF Ryan Johnson (College Station, TX) showed why he was considered one of the top hitting prospects in the nation coming into this event. He utilized his strong lower half well and generated plus bat speed from the left side with a long  uppercut swing with good separation of halves and tremendous power when he squared the ball up. The highlight of his BP session was a long home run that bounced off of the back wall of the bullpen behind right field.

1B Desmond Lindsay (Bradenton, FL) showed big raw power, and while he's got a few things to iron out mechanically, from a tools standpoint he stood out  amongst a group of impressive hitters.

BP Highlights: T Orange, V Gold, White

6/12/2014

C Elih Marrero (Miami, FL):  Marrero has a very professional approach at the plate, as befits the son of a former MLB catcher.  His approach is notably similar from both sides, although he showed a bit more power from the right side.

SS Nicholas Shumpert (Lone Tree, CO):  Shumpert his under control and balanced, something that always enables him to use his big bat speed and power better than a full gorilla BP swing.  The power is there without the long swing and is more frequent.

OF Daniel Reyes (Miami Springs, FL):  There was no question who hit the longest BP home runs, as Reyes blasts just disappeared onto back fields like six irons.  He has very fast hands but also does a great job of using his back side to generate power to drive those hands.

1B Brandt Stallings (Buford, GA):  Stallings really stood out in game action and flashed that power in batting practice when he was able to stay back with his front side and not reach for the ball early.  The ball really carries off his bat.

OF Lorenzo Hampton (Miami Lakes, FL):  the 6-4/205 Hampton will have to work on shortening his swing, a challenging task considering his long arms and legs, but he's loose and coordinated with his swing and has lots of power potential.

3B Matthew McKeown (Barrington, NJ):  McKeown has a fundamentally sound swing that is notable for its combination of a short, direct path to the ball but it's power potential.

OF Cameron Montgomery (Windemere, FL):  Montgomery hits from a very spread stance, which often inhibits power and lower half use, but the young right handed hitter does a nice job using his strength to generate power and bat speed.

BP Highlights: Royal, Steel

6/12/2014

C Hunter Stovall (Pelham, AL):  Stovall will need to gain more strength for the next level of the game but he sure hits lots of balls square and up the gaps.

RHP Austin Riley (Hernando, MS):  Riley is a primary pitcher but there is likely a strong contingent of scouts who think his future might lie as a power hitting third baseman.  He almost cleared the Monster in the games as well.

OF Kevin Collard (Vista, CA): Collard is a very polished left handed hitting outfielder with a loose, strong swing that produced steady hard pull contact.

IF Daniel Neal (London, KY):  Neal has lots of strength and leverage in his 6-3/190 frame and swings the bat hard with intent to drive it.  His swing has nice plane and extension through contact, which is usually very hard.

1B Dillon Paulson (San Marcos, CA):  Paulson got in a very nice groove during batting practice and really handled the barrel well, showing both line drive plane and the ability to lift the ball to the pull side.

OF Greg Pickett (Aurora, CO):  Pickett not only has huge leverage in his 6-4/220 build, he has some of the fastest hands in the class.  That combination creates top of the grading scale power on the young left handed hitter.

C Darren Shred (Brampton, ON):  Shred is a young Canadian who impressed in many areas at the National and particularly with his bat speed and power in batting practice.

BP Highlights: Black, Red

6/12/2014

OF Keegan Meyn (Oklahoma City, OK):  Meyn has a nice athletic 6-3/190 build and a long, powerful swing with lots of lift and carry.

OF Seth Beer (2016, Suwanee, GA):  Beer is a 2016 but he has a birthdate more suiting to a 2015 player, along with the strength of an older player.  He made consistent hard pull contact with very good raw bat speed.

3B Zeke Dodson (Tifton, GA):  Dodson's swing gets long at times but he is very strong and the ball jumps off his barrel.  He will continue to improve as he shortens his path to the ball.

OF Bryan Scheker (Clermont, FL):  Scheker has very good bat speed with an easy and repeatable swing that has lots of natural lift to it.

SS Brody Wofford (Rome, GA):  Wofford has some strength to gain but he has a nice quick swing with lots of rhythm and balance in his approach.

OF Daz Cameron (McDonough, GA):  We didn't see any batting practice bombs from the explosive Cameron, just a controlled and well paced BP that produced a series of very loud line drives all around the field.

SS Travis Blankenhorn (Pottsville, PA):  Blankenhorn is a left handed hitting middle infielder with lots of present strength and explosive hands at the ball.

SS/OF Alonzo Jones (Columbus, GA):  Not only is a Jones an exceptionally fast athlete, he's a switch-hitter with strength and bat speed from both sides of the plate, with a bit better swing from the left side.

1B Jason Heinrich (Spring Hill, FL):  Heinrich is extremely strong and has a strength bases swing from the right side of the plate.  He does stay inside the ball a bit too long but showed the ability to drive it hard to right centerfield.

SS John Aiello (Lansdale, PA):  Aiello is long, loose and strong, all ingredients for a top level hitter.  The difference is that Aiello can do it from both sides of the plate to a pretty much equal degree.

OF/1B Isaiah Gilliam (Lilburn, GA):  Gilliam is a 2015 in age although he was eligible for the 2014 draft due to expired high school eligibility.  He put on a show from both sides of the plate, blasting two balls over the Green Monster in left before lifting three more impressive drives into the bullpens in right field.

BP Highlights: Crimson, Navy

6/12/2014

SS Nico Hoerner (Oakland, CA):  Hoerner had a very solid overall approach, with a short line drive swing that produced consistent hard contact to all fields and some gap power.

1B Austin Russ (Valencia, CA):  Russ had lots of bat speed through contact and the ball come off his barrel hard with lots of carry.  He has a whippy swing with a hand hitch start that might cause some issues with velocity without some adjustments.

SS Nick Poirier (Alamo, CA):  Poirier has a slender young build that is very projectable but already has a loose swing with good bat speed and some pull power.

IF Daniel Montes (Coral Gables, FL):  Montes showed a long loose swing with consistent hard line drive contact.

IF Braden Comeaux (Lake Charles, LA):  Comeaux explodes his hands very well at contact, creating more bat speed and pop than you would expect from a 6-0/165 middle infielder.

IF Daino Deas (Lilburn, GA):  Deas also hit the ball very well in games and squared up everything the pitchers threw at him, plus showing surprising pop for a 5-10/175 middle infielder.  He's really improved.

3B Bryce Denton (Brentwood, TN):  Denton is a strong right handed hitter who starts with his hands set low and swings hard, creating lots of bat speed and plenty of lift and carry.

OF Luke Farley (Denver, IA):  Farley simply squares the ball up all the time.  We see in all the time back in Iowa and we saw it again to no surprise in Fort Myers.  He has strength and advanced bat to barrel skills.

SS Cornelius Randolph (Griffin, GA):  Randolph is unusually strong for a middle infielder and does a nice job of using his hands to generate bat speed.  He closed out his round with two big bombs to show off his power potential.

Texas Orange vs Steel Game HIghlights

6/14/2014

Thomas Szapucki settled in nicely on the mound, working from a lower three-quarter arm slot and a fast ball which he ran up to 93 mph. Working in the 89-91 mph range, Szapucki generated some nice angle on his fastball which he was able to get to his glove side.

DJ Wilson (2015-OF-Canton, OH) started the game off with a quality at-bat, fouling off a couple off speed pitches until he lined an outside fastball down the left field line for a stand up double. Wilson showed off his fast hands from the left-handed batters box along with his speed which he gave everybody a glimpse of last night, running a 6.59 60-yard dash. In his second at bat, Wilson showed off his wheels again, cruising around the baseball for a standup triple on a hard hit ball down the right field line.

Drew Finley filled up the strike zone during his two innings on the mound, mixing together three pitches well. He worked his fastball in the 89-90 mph range with nice downhill plane and some run to his arm side and showed a 12-6 shaped curveball in the 73-76 mph range.

Both Dominic DiCaprio and Michael Benson showed well behind the plate for their respective teams in their first two innings behind the plate, both showing quick hands and solid receiving skills.

Kolby Allard was very impressive in his two innings of work, coming both sides of the plate with a fastball that sat in the 90-93 mph range with sharp downhill plane. He showed a feel for both a curveball up to 77 mph and a changeup that topped at 85 mph with fade to arm side. Allard used all three pitches effectively to collect 5 strikeouts.

Isaiah Musa was equally as dominant as Allard (above) showing solid velocity of his own, working his fastball in the 89-92 range, topping at 93 mph. To complement his fastball, Musa showed a sharp 79-81 slider with late break which he used to pick up 4 strikeouts.

Cody Davenport put all of his pitches on display in his first of two innings on the mound, pitching off his fastball which sat in the 86-90 mph range. He showed two different breaking balls, with a curveball at 72 mph and a slider at 77 mph while showing a feel for a changeup at 74 mph.

Kyle Ostrowski is a big left-handed pitcher who throws from a high three-quarter arm slot and produced a fastball that sat in the 86-89 mph range range with some life and solid angle. To go off his fastball, Ostrowski showed a curveball with 12-6 shape and depth at 71.

Although the ball didn't go out of the park, Dillon Paulson generated some of the loudest contact of the day on a long fly ball to right field, caught just in front of the 380' foot mark.

Drew Denkinger works from an over the top arm slot and worked downhill with a fastball that sat in the 86-88 mph and missed bats with the pitch. He mixed in a 12-6 curveball with depth at 74 which he used to pick up a strikeout.

Joe DeMers came out throwing in his first inning of work, throwing only one pitch that didn't clock in at 93 or 94 mph and that was at 92. He showed a sharp slider with late break at 82 mph and a changeup with fade that had hitters swinging out on their front foot. In the second inning DeMers pumped his fastball up to 95 mph and brought out a curveball that showed 11-5 life at 75 mph.

After taking a strong round of batting practice the night prior, Nicholas Shumpert proved again that his hit tool plays in game action, going 2-2 with a couple of well struck singles. His speed (6.52 60-yard last night) also factored into the game as he was able to successfully swipe to bases.

Brandt Stallings came out swinging on the second fastball he saw at 94 mph and drove it to deep right field for a standup double. Stallings came out of the box well and really accelerates once he gets going around the bases.

JD Williams barreled up a fastball in his second at bat of the night, going with the pitch and picking up a double down the right field line.

Royal vs. Red

6/14/2014

It settled into the right fielder's glove, but the sound off the bat in particular was one of the loudest of the week.

Ethan Gillis (2015, LHP, Senioa, GA) topped at 88 mph, and pitched consistently at 85-87 mph with his fastball over two innings of work. He struck out two batters.

Mike Nikorak (2015, RHP, Stroudsburg, PA) was electric right out of the gate for the Red squad, topping at 97 and working consistently between 92-95 mph. He also flashed a hard, late breaking plus breaking ball. He struck out three in an eye opening outing.

Nicholas Oar (2015, OF, Pleasant Hill, CA) smoked a hard line drive to the opposite field gap, showing the ability to go with an outside pitch.

Andrew Miller (2015, LHP, Stratford, NJ) worked mostly at 86-89 mph with his fastball and topped at 90 over his two innings of work.

Danny Blair (2015, OF, Bel Air, MD) hit one of the day's hardest line drives, lacing a shot past the first baseman for a single.

Logan (LT) Tolbert (2015, SS, Piedmont, SC) followed Blair's at-bat with another solid single through the right side. He also tossed a solid inning of relief, topping at 89 mph.

Keegan James (2015, RHP, Southhaven, MS) worked two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two. He worked at 86-89 mph with his fastball.

Austin Figueroa (2015, RHP Gurabo, PR) topped at 88 mph in his two innings of work. He also struck out four batters.

Bryce Denton (2015, 3B/RHP, Brentwood, TN) worked at 83-86 mph in his one scoreless inning of work.

Green vs Gold

6/14/2014

The Gold team put up plenty of offense at 9:00 AM, picking up three runs on three hits in the first inning. Tyler Holton (2015, LHP/OF, Tallahassee, FL) got the offense started with a single back through the box in the first inning and . Kirk Sidwell (2015, OF, Windemere, FL) drove in a run with a well struck line drive to left center with backspin for an RBI single and would lead off the sixth inning with a Fenway (south) Single off the Green Monster.

The defensive play of the game came on a 4-6-3 double play from Brendan Rodgers (2015, SS, Longwood, FL) to Jonah Garrison (2015, MIF, Orlando, FL) to Devin Davis (2015, 1B, Valencia, CA). Rodgers had to range far to his left while playing an unfamiliar position (2B) and got to a ball that looked destined for right field, he then made a great athletic maneuver to make a quick clean feed to Garrison coming across the bag at second while his momentum carried him away from the throw. Garrison finished the play with a strong throw.

Michael Zimmerman (2015, LHP, Naples, FL) struck out four in his two inning start, inducing very tentative swings on his big sweeping curveball with sharp break and huge depth at 71-75. His fastball topped out at 87 mph working comfortably in the mid 80s with good feel.

Ke'Bryan Hayes (2015, 3B/RHP, Tomball, TX) was impressive as a secondary pitcher in his one inning of relief, topping out at 89 mph with good movement and sharp curveball at 75-76, he struck out two.

Braden Rollins (2015, OF/RHP, Lake Mary, FL) d

Chris Gau (2015, RHP, Jacksonville, FL) flashed a quality splitter at 80-82 mph as a very good change of pace to his 85-88 mph fastball and showed sharp break on a 75-76 mph 12-6 curveball. He struck out two and didn't allow a hit in his two innings of work.

Nick Fortes (2015, C, Deland, FL) stung the ball twice in two at-bats, after making a loud out on a flyball to CF his first time up he blasted a Fenway (south) Single off the wall in left. He is also a very solid catch and throw defender behind the plate.

Marquise Doherty (2015, OF, Gladstone, MO) and Chris Chatfield (2015, OF, Riverview, FL) ended the game with back to back RBI singles. Both are high upside athletes with loud tools that are starting to come together.

Casey Goldenberg (2015, RHP, North Palm Beach, FL) got the start for the Green team and topped out at 87 mph.

Ryan Welsh (2015, RHP, Windemere, FL) struck out the side in his second inning of work and topped out at 86.

Kyle Hatton (2015, LHP/1B, Norco, CA) stuck out three in his two scoreless no-hit innings of work, topping out at 86.

Batting Practice Highlights: Gold/Green

6/12/2014

SS Jonathan India (Coral Springs, FL):  India explodes his hands through the zone very well and showed big jump off the barrel when he squared it up.  He's aggressive with very good bat speed.

1B Tyrone Perry (Avon Park, FL):  Perry has plenty of young David Ortiz in his build and swing.  He's immensely strong and can hit the ball out of the park to all fields.

OF Mitchell Hansen (Plano, TX):  Hansen's swing mechanics are very simple and short to the ball but still with very nice bat speed.  He looks like a lefty swinger who will hit for both power and average.

OF Jahmai Jones (Roswell, GA):  Jones combination of strength and hand quickness is ideal for a top hitting prospect.  The ball just explodes off his barrel.

OF Braden Rollins (Lake Mary, FL):  Rollins swing is on the long side but he has big lift in his swing and the ball really carries when he squares it up.

LHP Chris Gau (Jacksonville, FL):  There is always a pitcher or two who has the athleticism and swing mechanics to make you take note of his two-way abilities.  Gau's approach really stood out.

SS Ramon Alejo (Orlando, FL):  Alejo has gained some real strength over the last 8-10 months and it shows in his raw bat speed and the way the ball comes off the barrel.

SS Kody Clemens (Houston, TX):  Clemens is a different type of athlete than the rest of the baseball playing Clemens', with lots of quick twitch fibers instead of raw strength.  He has a crisp, short left handed swing with some power to go with it.

SS Brendan Rodgers (Longwood, FL):  Rodgers raw power is so easy and natural you sometimes don't appreciate it as much as you should....until he lifts what looks like a normal fly ball to centerfield that goes over the fence with room to spare.

1B Evans Bozeman (Pensacola, FL):  There were no lack of very strong first base types on display during batting practice but Bozeman was one of the best.  He gets loaded very well on his back side and has big lift and power.

OF Chris Chatfield (Riverview, FL):  Chatfield has gained about 15 pounds over the last year and it shows in his bat speed and power.  He has really improved.

1B Davin Davis (Santa Clarita, CA):  Add Davis to that list of power hitting first basemen with big strength and bat speed.

OF-1B Josh Naylor (Mississauga, ON):  Add Naylor to that list of.....you know the story.
