2013 Top Prospects

Jacob Brentz  LHP - 2013 - Ballwin, MO
Missouri/Jefferson College

The scouting world has been waiting for Brentz to throw again since Jupiter last October and he didn't disappoint anyone, hitting 94 mph frequently from a surprisingly polished delivery and a smooth, low effort arm action. The converted outfielder has very little experience on the mound but looks like a veteran in many ways with top round stuff.

Clinton Hollon  RHP - 2013 - Lexington, KY
Kentucky

This is the first time that Hollon has thrown in front of scouts since a bout of elbow tendonitis late last summer and it was a very successful outing. The PG All-American topped out at 94 mph and threw both his curveball and change up with confidence. We're predicting a very successful spring for the Kentucky right hander.

AJ Puk  LHP - 2013 - Cedar Rapids, IA
Florida

Puk didn't throw at the event as he's just starting his spring throwing program but he was the top hitting prospect, which is impressive enough in and of itself. He was in a hitting group facing the top pitching prospects and has no problem handling low 90's type velocity despite his long 6-6 frame.

Devin Williams  RHP - 2013 - Florissant, MO
Missouri

Williams has added size and strength and looks to be about 6-4/190 now. You aren't going to find a much smoother and easier arm action and he was pumping his fastball up to the plate at 91-93 with outstanding life at times. His change up and slider are still works in progress and how much he can improve these are really the key to his development.

Andrew Dunlap  DH - 2013 - Houston, TX
Rice

Andrew Dunlap the power hitting catcher became Andrew Dunlap the top prospect pitcher at this event. He sat comfortably at 93-94 mph and touched 96 mph with his fastball and showed the ability to put hard spin on an upper 70's curveball. He has a high effort reliever's delivery and very few innings under his belt but it's hard not to think of Craig Kimbrel at the same age when you see him.

Derek Burkamper  RHP - 2013 - Muscatine, IA
Nebraska

Burkamper has made huge improvements across the board since the summer/fall and has put himself on many teams draft boards based on this performance. He pitched in the 89-91 mph range and showed outstanding power and spin to his breaking ball and had good feel for all his pitches.

Storm Rynard  RHP - 2013 - Raymore, MO
Wichita State/Cowley County CC

Rynard has a slender, projectable build with a loose arm and very solid delivery mechanics. He topped out at 90 mph and showed a very nice change up to compliment his fastball. His slider flashed some quality at times but will need to become more consistent.

Chuckie Robinson  C - 2013 - Danville, IL
University of Southern Mississippi

The best part of the 6-2/220 Robinson's showcase performance was seeing his continuing defensive improvement. He received the ball very well and was especially good at shifting and blocking. He has tons of strength in his right handed swing and big power potential.

Dan Herrmann  RHP - 2013 - Creve Coeur, MO
Bradley

Herrmann has a mature and very strong 6-5/215 build and a mature, polished approach to pitching. He topped out at 91 mph and threw lots of 91's and showed the ability to spot his fastball to both sides of the plate. His slider and change up were both quality secondary pitches.

Benjamin Miller  LHP - 2013 - Clive, IA
Nebraska

Miller has been pitching in the PG Iowa spring and fall leagues since he was a freshman throwing 78 mph and this was by far the best he's ever thrown for PG scouts. He sat steadily in the upper 80's and showed a much improved curveball to go with his already solid change up.

Matt Fiedler  RHP - 2013 - Eagan, MN
Minnesota

Fiedler is a primary shortstop and he showed plenty of athleticism in the batter's box and a good right handed swing. But where he really shined was on the mound, where he topped out at 91 mph with the makings of a good mid 70's power curveball.

Brent Gibbs  C - 2013 - Alton, IL
Indiana

Gibbs is extremely strong at 6-1/215 but retains his looseness and athleticism well. He receives the ball very calmly and cleanly behind the plate and showed outstanding raw arm strength at 83 mph. He's a right handed hitter with a strong line drive swing and very good bat speed.

Ethan Landon  RHP - 2013 - Sioux Falls, SD
Michigan State

Landon is a South Dakota native with a very long and loose 6-5/175 build. He topped out at 90 mph it would be hard not imagine he will gain even more velocity as he gets stronger. The main key to his development, though, will be improving his secondary pitches.

2014 Top Prospects

Alex Lange  RHP - 2014 - Lee's Summit, MO
Louisiana State

Lange has the physical build and presence, along with the present pitchability, of a much older pitcher and it's difficult to remember sometimes that he's still a 2014. He topped out at 92 mph with a very good slider at times, although he didn't show the filthy plus change up we've seen in the past.

Tanner Gragg  C - 2014 - Overland Park, KS
Kansas

Gragg has a chance to be one of the best catchers in the 2014 class. He has a very balanced set of tools incorporating both offense and defense and the strength and athleticism for the position. It will be nice to see him for more extended action starting in the summer!

Keaton McKinney  RHP - 2014 - Ankeny, IA
Arkansas

McKinney didn't pitch at the event but is probably a better pitching prospect at this point based on his performance last summer and fall, when he was topping out at 91 mph with much improved secondary stuff. But he is a top level two-way prospect, with a big pull power.

Lincoln Henzman  RHP - 2014 - Lexington, KY
Louisville

Henzman has added a nice slider and even better cutter to his upper 80's fastball/plus change up combination since last summer and that's made him a much more complete pitcher. It was a very impressive performance for the young Kentucky native.

Chad Spanberger  C - 2014 - Granite City, IL
Arkansas

Spanberger has a young look to him and still projects despite his present 6-3/210 build. He doesn't need to get too much stronger for his offensive game, as his left handed swing is hard, loose and powerful.

Mitch Keller  RHP - 2014 - Cedar Rapids, IA
North Carolina

Keller is starting to fill out and is now up to 6-3/195 and still growing. He's also made significant improvement in his pitching mechanics. Those things add up to a fastball that was topping out at 89 mph and should be in the low 90's this spring.

Brad Archer  RHP - 2014 - Lebanon, MO
Missouri State

Archer is a very young looking 2014 with a fast and loose arm. He topped out at 90 mph from a deceptively low effort delivery. He'll have to improve his secondary pitches but velocity is not going to be an issue in the future from this young right hander.
