2016 Top Prospects

Lael Lockhart Jr.  1B - 2016 - Friendswood, TX
University of Houston

Lockhart did what he seemingly always does at Perfect Game showcase events, which is perform at a high level. As mentioned in the BP Blog, the switch-hitting Lockhart's right handed swing was as fluid as it has ever been this weekend, and with an advanced approach and feel for the barrel he is a true weapon from both sides of the plate. His hands and defensive actions were typically outstanding.

James (Alex) Haynes  RHP - 2016 - Knoxville, TN
Tennessee/Walters State CC

At 6-foot-3, 185 pounds, Haynes owns a nice projectable pitcher's build. The righty worked consistently in the 87-90 mph range with his fastball, touching an event-best 91 mph. Aside from the impressive fastball with riding life, Haynes, committed to Walters State CC, has a good delivery and he flashes feel for both his slider and changeup.

Trevor Smith  SS - 2016 - Oneonta, AL

Smith had a very impressive weekend. He has a solid, well rounded skillset, and the athletic 6-foot, 195 pound shortstop ran a 6.92 60-yard dash and shows good baserunning instincts. He also had a solid round of batting practice, showing some raw power with a homerun to left center field, and an advanced feel for the barrel. He also has good instincts in the field to go along with a strong arm, clocked at up to 89 and 85 mph in the outfield and infield respectively.

Harrison Boozer  LHP - 2016 - Bessemer, AL

Boozer, a 6-foot-4, 225 pound lefthanded pitcher displayed very solid command and feel for three pitches. He has a smooth, repeatable delivery and was up to 87 mph with good downhill plane and angle. Additionally, he showcased a deceptive late-breaking slider with good depth and a fading changeup.

Luis Alvarez  SS - 2016 - New York, NY
Bucknell

Alvarez has solid secondary tools, but his loudest tool is certainly his bat. The New York native has a very aggressive leg lift trigger and he swings the bat with aggression and intent. He has good bat speed and natural loft in his swing plane so when he squares a ball up, it can go a long way, as he displayed in his batting practice round.

Zach Cable  C - 2016 - Roswell, GA
Oklahoma State/Chattahoochee Valley CC

Cable turned heads with his strong arm this weekend. The 6-foot, 205 pound athlete posted the top velocities in both the outfield and catcher defensive drills, at 92 mph and 83 mph respectively. He also flashes good strength in his righthanded swing and was up to 88 mph on the mound in game action.

Kieran Casey  RHP - 2016 - Jupiter, FL
Davidson/St. Petersburg College

At a listed 6-foot-3, 180 pounds, Casey also possesses a nice pitchers build. The righty was up to 88 mph, consistently working in the 85-87 mph range with his fastball. He also showed some feel for the barrel and strength with developing raw power in his swing during batting practice.

John Mullis  RHP - 2016 - Cornelia, GA
Chattahoochee Valley CC

Mullis showed impressive arm speed this weekend, hitting 89 mph off of the mound in game action. He has a strong lower half and uses good leg drive and burst down the rubber to generate solid extension. His fastball has good riding life and he flashes solid feel for his changeup in the mid-70s.

Nathan Anthes  C - 2016 - Marietta, GA
University of Alabama at Birmingham

Anthes has good defensive tools at both catcher and in the outfield. He popped as low as 1.82 seconds, one of the quickest events of the event, and also showed looseness in his arm and athletic actions and movements in the outfield. Additionally, Anthes has solid bat speed and showed solid line-drive contact to his pullside.

Noah Cole  RHP - 2016 - Marietta, GA
Oglethorpe University

Cole has some deception in his delivery with a big hip turn and the 6-foot-3, 180 pound righty shows solid arm strength, touching 86 mph. He creates good plane on his fastball, and also shows some developing feel for a curveball and split-changeup.

Marshall Skinner  C - 2016 - Cypress, TX
Northwestern State/Blinn College

Skinner, a University of Houston commit, also displayed solid arm strength this weekend. Behind the dish, Skinner has a quick exchange and release, posting pop times as low as 1.94 seconds and nabbing runners at both second and third base. Additionally, he flashes solid strength to his pullside in his swing.

Allen Shad  OF - 2016 - Peachtree City, GA

Shad had a solid all-around showcase this weekend. The athletic outfielder ran a 6.71 60-yard dash, one of the top seven times of the entire event. He also was clocked at up to 88 mph in defensive drills, and put together a very nice showing at the plate, where he has solid bat speed, feel for the barrel, and gap power.

Austin Zeitler  OF - 2016 - Canton, GA
Union University/Chattahoochee Valley CC

Zeitler is another well-rounded player. The 6-foot-170 pound outfielder has good footspeed, turning in a 6.79 60-yard dash time, and he performed well defensively, with solid fundamentals and actions to go along with a strong arm (88 mph). The righthanded hitter also uses the entire field well at the plate and shows developing power.

Patrick Mullinger  C - 2016 - Cincinnati, OH

Mullinger showed strong power potential in his batting practice on Saturday, and then displayed true power utility in game action on Sunday, driving a ball over the left field fence for a home run. The strong bodied 6-foot-1, 200 pound catcher also popped as low as 1.90 in defensive drills.

Al Batson  MIF - 2016 - Antioch, TN

Batson was one of the quicker players this weekend, posting a 6.71 60-yard dash time. He also flashed solid arm speed and arm strength in both the infield and outfield, hitting 86 and 84 mph respectively in defensive drills.

Austin Jeter  OF - 2016 - Atlanta, GA

Jeter has a nice athletic 6-foot, 180 pound frame and the right handed hitter shows solid bat speed and an ability to get the bat head through the zone from his deep hand position. He had a solid batting practice round, and also hit well in games. Additionally, Jeter has good speed, running a 6.77 60-yard dash.

Tyrik Jones  OF - 2016 - Lithonia, GA
Spartanburg Methodist College

Jones has long been known to Perfect Game as an exceptionally fast runner, and this weekend he set his own personal best in the 60-yard dash, posting a 6.41, the fastest of the Southeast Top Prospect Showcase. Jones also flashes hitting tools in solid bat speed and hand quickness.

Carter Morgan  RHP - 2016 - Charlotte, NC

Morgan also was one of the numerous participants with impressive arm strength. The athletic 6-foot-4, 195 pound Morgan hit 88 mph in both outfield and infield defensive workouts, showing good carry and direction with his throws. He was also up to 85 mph off of the mound in game action.

Tyler Sylvester  3B - 2016 - Lithonia, GA
Tennessee Tech

As he did at Sunshine Southeast Showcase this past May, Sylvester a wide array of tools. The athletic 6-foot-2, 205 pound infielder has solid arm strength that plays both in the field--where he posted one of the best infield velocities of the event--and on the mound where he was up to 86 mph. Sylvester also flashes good raw power with solid life and jump off of the barrel.
