WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — Arizona sophomore second baseman Trent Gilbert has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week and Oregon freshman left-handed pitcher Cole Irvin has been tabbed Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for March 25-31, the Conference office announced Monday.

Gilbert led Arizona to a sweep of Utah last week. The Torrance, Calif. native accounted for nine of the Wildcats’ 21 runs in the series. He batted .385 (5-for-13) for the week with a pair of doubles, three runs scored and six RBI. He also drew a walk and was hit by a pitch, boosting his on-base percentage to .467. Gilbert tallied a career-high five RBI, including a pair of two-run doubles in a 15-4 win on Friday, and, on Saturday, he helped secure the sweep with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning that provided the winning margin (2-1). Gilbert leads all Pac-12 players with 35 RBI and ranks in the top five in hits (30) and runs scored (34). His five triples this season also lead the Conference and are tied for the national lead. Defensively, he is tied for second in the Pac-12 with 88 assists, seven of which came in last weekend’s series against the Utes.

This is Gilbert’s first career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and Arizona’s 59th all-time selection.

Irvin pitched Oregon’s first complete-game shutout of the season and only allowed two runners to advance past first base in the Ducks’ 6-0 victory over Washington on Saturday. He allowed just four hits, while striking out a season-high 11 batters and registering one walk. The Yorba Linda, Calif. product found his rhythm early, fanning seven batters through the first four innings, and never let up. He struck out one in the sixth, another in the seventh and notched a pair of punch outs in the ninth. Irvin, who owns a 3.00 season ERA, improved to 5-1 with the win. In 48.0 innings of action, the freshman has collected 27 strikeouts and has allowed just one home run. The Ducks are 8-1 in league play and sit atop the Pac-12 standings.

This is Irvin’s first career Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week selection and Oregon’s 6th all-time.
