Got to see his first start of the year yesterday (he'd pitched 4 innings or so in scrimmages) and he's every bit as good as rumored. He was a little bit wild -- several opposing batters were plunked and lived to tell -- but despite temperatures in the 40s he commanded his pitches well for the most part, throwing the FB to the corners with a nice, late tail. Dave Rawnsley's WWBA notes (see PG archives) say it all, as Cherry has one of the easiest and nicest deliveries you'll ever see on a 6'9" h.s. junior and he generates low-90s heat like he's playing catch. He started getting on top of the slider by the third inning and it's very much a potential plus pitch as well. As Dave said, size+velocity+command. A rare talent.
