While not quite as close as last week's games (which yielded one of the lowest composite averages of any week over the last three years), the series this week also look pretty even. We could again see some low scores (in voters' tallies, not necessarily the actual games) and/or some upsets. Numbers are ISRs as of 4/13.

This week's games:
  • OSU (13) at Stan (12)
  • Ariz (32) at UCLA (34)
  • WSU (44) at ASU (10)
  • Ore (70) at USC (78)
  • Cal (17) at UW (171)
The Oregon State series once again sits at the top of the list, this time against Stanford at Sunken Diamond. The Beavers are fresh off a historic sweep of Arizona State and have jumped in all of the national polls about ten slots, hovering around #10 in the most credible polls. They've won their first twwo Pac-10 series, against very good competition, both away and at home. They face their third straight serious test in Palo Alto. The Cardinal is ranked in all the major polls as well, somewhere between 16 and 20, and have a slightly higher ISR. But they dropped two of three against USC on the road last week. Maybe playing at home, where they are 9-1 so far, will provide enough of an edge to take the series.
UCLA and Arizona provide the second best series. No disrespect to USC, UW, and Wazzu, but this looks like UCLA's first difficult conference test. One has to believe Arizona's conference would be equal to or better than the Bruins' had they swapped schedules. As it is, Arizona has single wins against ASU and OSU and a series win over Cal, plus a better overall record (22-11 vs. 17-11).

Wazzu at Arizona State does not appear to be as good a series as it looked before Wazzu dropped their first three conference series, but this one looks like it could be a trap. ASU is expected to come out angry and hungry after dropping three in Corvallis, and nobody expects much from Wazzu, especially on the road. But I have to believe they will turn it around sometime. If not this week, then hopefully two weeks from now.

The third “close” series this week features free-falling Oregon versus rebounding USC. After showing signs of improvement by taking single wins against UCLA and Cal (on the road), USC pulled an upset last week beating the Cardinal twice at home. Oregon was on the verge of being swept in their first two conference series when they discovered they did have bats in their equipment bag on the last game against the Huskies last Sunday. Will the equipment manager bring them to LA this weekend?

Lastly, Cal at UW. Washington showed signs of growth against Oregon last week, and they will be playing at home. But Cal is quite a different team, and Seattle's windy wet weather might not be enough to slow the Bears.

The reminders:

  • Vote for the team you expect to win and whether the results will be 3-0 or 2-1.
  • Pick teams in the exact order posted. This makes it easier for me to tabulate.
  • Use the team abbreviations listed in the sample below. (This means NO to "Furd" "UA" "WASH", etc.)
  • You can change your picks up until first pitch of the first game.
  • There are no prizes. We play for glory.
Points are awarded in the following manner:

Pick . . Result . . Pts.
3-0 . . . 3-0 . . . . . 6
. . . . . . 2-1 . . . . . 3
. . . . . . 1-2 . . . . . 1
. . . . . . 0-3 . . . . . 0

2-1 . . . 3-0 . . . . . 3
. . . . . . 2-1 . . . . . 4
. . . . . . 1-2 . . . . . 2
. . . . . . 0-3 . . . . . 1

A sample poll would look like this:

Stan 2-1
Ariz 2-1
WSU 2-1
Ore 3-0
UW 3-0

Lute, glad to see you jump in. And remember, we don't charge anything for voting or for being a d-bag. ;-)

Vacillated on a Cal win versus a Cal sweep. Same internal debate on ASU vs. Wazzu.

OSU 2-1
Ariz 2-1
ASU 2-1
USC 2-1
Cal 3-0

I do want OSU to stay on top to help us with our RPI woes, but feel they are over-inflated. Their downfall commences. But again I am just a bitter duck fan. lol.

Stan 2-1
Ariz 2-1
ASU 3-0
Ore 2-1
Cal 2-1

There's still time to get your picks in before first pitch, but here is your pick analysis (based on 16 votes).
  • No love for the Evergreen State this week. Both Washington and Washington State are unanimous favorites to lose (16-0).
  • ASU is the top vote-getter, with 12 voting for a sweep of the Cougs. Cal received 6 votes to sweep the Huskies.
  • The third highest vote receiver this week is USC, a 12-4 favorite over the Ducks. No sweeps for either team.
  • The two most tightly contested series are the top two on our list. The Beavers own a 10-6 advantage over Stanford, but there is also a preponderance of OSU fans in this poll, so that will skew the votes somewhat. Stanford received one sweep vote.
  • Right behind is the UA/UCLA series, with UCLA edging the Wildcats by a 9-7 margin, including one sweep.
