Not a lot of exciting series this weekend (looking at them on paper). Cal has a bye, and UCLA is playing nonconference foe CS Bakersfield. All four of the conference series have upper rank teams visiting lower ranked teams. So there's no single “gotta watch that” series of ranked opponents, IMHO. This week's games:
  • Ariz at WSU
  • Stan at Ore
  • ASU at USC
  • OSU at UW
  • CSB at UCLA
Arizona visits the Palouse. The Wildcats got three near-real-game-experience practice sessions last week against some group of college students known mysteriously as “Alcorn State”, so the Cats are rested. Wazzu, OTOH, suffered yet another disappointing series loss to a pretty good (but not great) UNLV team. I keep thinking, with Wazzu's talent, that they will have to break out soon and string together a good three-game series one of these days. This could be it. If not, they're done...maybe already. (Programming note: This series runs Saturday through Monday.)

Stanford in Eugene. Yes, the Cardinal swept UW last week, in Palo Alto. But it wasn't that easy, even though UW is the worst team in the league. Twice the Huskies were ahead late and their bullpen was called on to put out fires with gasoline. Oregon's bullpen has also given away some games late, but they have better arms than UW. If they could only score a few runs....

ASU is probably the hottest team in the league now...hard to bet against them. If you look at where the Pac-10 coaches thought USC would be at the beginning of the season and compare to where they are now, you'd say they have overachieved. But is that enough for a “good, rebuilding” year? Do they have at least one well-rounded competitive game in them for this weekend?

Oregon State owns a 224-185 all-time edge over Washington, but the Huskies, even in bad years, have had a habit of taking at least one from the Beavers. This is one of those bad years for them (and it's a very good year for the Beavs), but they have narrowly missed beating some very good teams, such as Stanford last week, on the road, twice.

Cal State Bakersfield still has an outside shot to make the field of 64 in their first year of eligibility, but they have to win all 10 of their remaining games (according to Boyd). Whom do they play? Nine of their last ten games are against UCLA, Fresno, Cal Poly.

No upsets this week, though I think Oregon could easily ruin my day 2-1.

Ariz 2-1
Stan 2-1(This one worries me, Oregon could easily rebound this weekend)
ASU 3-0
OSU 2-1
UCLA 2-1

The UCLA pick worries me too. My first thought was them sweeping, but the way they've played last night and tonight made me change it. I kind of wonder if Bakersfield could be an upset waiting to happen.

Ariz 2-1 If Wazzu plays the way they did against OSU they could take 2 of 3.
Stanford 2-1 Will the ducks actually be able to hold on to a lead? Maybe 1, but this series could easily be 3-0 Cardinal.
ASU 3-0 Very tough to pick against. I don't think USC has the horses to keep up.
OSU 3-0 This worries me, but having Susac and Rodriguez back really helps.
UCLA 3-0 The Bruins pitching should be enough even if their bats are relatively silent.

Ariz 2-1, WSU keeps letting me down when i pick them
Stan 2-1 ducks could take one, but thats it could just as easily be a stan sweep
ASU 2-1 this is more like wishful hoping on my part to allow the beavs some more breathing room
OSU 3-0 really hate the purple dogs
UCLA 3-0 gotta go pac10 baby!

Borg, I just realized you and I have the same picks. And I have to concur with all of your comments. I'd like to see Wazzu do it, but they've disappointed me too many weeks in a row. INCLUDING the one when I wanted them to get swept and they didn't.

UCLA 2-1 (I'll let the kitty out of the bag, I go to CSB...Yes, I would love to see CSB take all three and keep their Regional hopes alive...but I'm also a realist. Our fielding will kill us.)

have you noticed, without the trolls on here and ignorants (or mostly ignorants at least), there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of traffic? This is nice!

And hey, CDinSV, you kinda qualify as you ARE left coast west coast ball. Besides, I think somewhere in the charter we voted on for this topic string, there are rules that allow for the inclusion of all voters that are nice and humble in their approach to their picks (even you riverduck LOL). Kinda nice to see more non-Beaver fans here picking! Getting lopsided heavy for the Beavs.

This is so dam exciting!!!!

Was hoping to get a few more votes before posting this, but I'm bored and tired of waiting. Here's your pick analysis:
  • Oregon State, Arizona State, and UCLA are unanimous 18/0 picks to win.
  • OSU earned 15 sweeps, ASU 12 sweeps, UCLA 9 sweeps.
  • Stanford and Arizona are 16/2 favorites to win.
  • Stanford earned 5 sweeps; Arizona earned 2 sweeps.
  • Nobody voted for Cal this week.
  • We had 11 Beaver voters, 3 Devils, 1 Cardinal, 1 Bruin, 1 Roadrunner, and 1 unknown.
  • No Ducks voted in this week's predictions.
  • We have had no Wazzu, Arizona, or UW fans this year.
  • We are in the middle of the third straight year that nobody has even sighted a Cal fan. Not even a whiff of a Cal fan has been detected, and some of them can be smelled from quite a distance. Maybe we should start calling them the Golden Sasquatches, not just because some of their pitchers have as much hair as a sasquatch, but because their fans are so rare.
  • Last year we had a slight plurality of Devils, so this year marks a decided drop in Devil participation.

What's up with the the Beavers starting Osich instead of Gaviglio? Doesn't look like the move worked out for Casey as Osich got slapped around and was yanked in the 4th after 85 pitches. The Huskie are thumping the Beavs 4-2 in the fourth.
