This one has me scratching my head. St. Mary and BYU played a conference game today. They've opened up conference play on the second week of the season. There's not another WCC game scheduled until the fourth weekend of March. ONly thing I can think of is they had too many scheduling issues with BYU coming into the conference so suddenly and this was the only time they could pair these two teams. Still it is odd to see.

BTW, the WCC has four undefeated teams, and, not counting today's SMC/BYU matchup, the conference is 25-7 (.781). In terms of other western conferences, the Pac-12 is 31-12 (.721), and the Big West is 17-18 (.486).

It was already scheduled for this weekend as a non-conf series before BYU joined the WAC. They just decided to leave the series as is instead of moving it to later in the season.

Dave W hit the nail on the head about the reasoning behind the series .... FYI.
