Week 10
  • UCLA at OSU
  • ASU at Stan
  • Ariz at UW
  • WSU at Ore
  • Utah at Cal
  • USC: bye. NOTE: Since USC is not playing any games this weekend, each point in the five series that will be played will count as 1.2 points.
I haven't felt the need to post many reminders on how to cast your vote, but apparently I should do this once in a while. Please list your picks in the same order they appear above and use the exact abbreviations as listed. Thanks.

Week 10 Series
  • UCLA again highlights this week’s series, for the third time in a row (and probably next week as well). Tied for first with both Arizona and Oregon, the Bruins (10-5) head to Corvallis to meet the Beavers (6-6). Players to watch at the plate in this series: OSU’s Michael Conforto, who has 51 RBIs (second in the nation) and leads Division I in RBIs per game (1.56). Two Tylers: UCLA’s Tyler Heineman and OSU’s Tyler Smith, 8th and 9th nationally in batting average respectively with .432 and .431. Smith has been in a sort of slump over the last six nonconference games, batting only .333 (7 for 21) over that period. But his conference BA is .457. UCLA’s Beau Amaral, the Pac-12 player of the week, who went 9-for-18 (.500) with two triples, one double, six RBIs, and seven runs in UCLA’s four games against top-25 ranked teams last week, posting a .778 slugging percentage. Amaral is currently sitting on an 18-game hitting streak.
  • Stanford, because of some very good preseason OOC victories, is still ranked in the upper reaches of most polls--between 8th and 19th with an average of 13th. But in Pac-12 play, they look mediocre. After unimpressive 2-1 series victories over USC and UW, and getting swept by Arizona and nearly swept at home by Oregon, the Cardinal find themselves at 5-7 in conference and will face a reinvigorated ASU (9-6). Stanford will have to sweep the Devils to get over the .500 mark in conference for the first time since their opening series against the Trojans--the first week of conference play. The Devils meanwhile have posted back-to-back conference sweeps of OSU and USC and are looking to diminish yet another postseason hopeful’s prospects.
  • Arizona (10-5) heads to Seattle to take on the Huskies (5-7). UW has one series victory so far, a home 2-1 affair over Oregon, along with three solo wins over Cal, OSU, and Stanford. So the Huskies don’t roll over for anyone. Arizona has played extremely well so far, but they’ve also suffered some head-scratching losses (Utah, Utah Valley, New Mexico State, North Dakota State). UW may have enough mojo for a victory...or two.
  • Wazzu (5-6) travels to Eugene to battle the Ducks (10-5). Oregon is riding high after winning its fourth series, a road victory over Stanford. And Alex Keudell has nabbed Pac-12 pitching honors for a second week in a row. Pitching is this team’s obvious strength, and they probably have enough to keep Wazzu’s sometimes powerful bats in check. But they would do well not to overlook a PNW foe with a habit of upsetting favored teams.
  • Utah (5-10) visits Cal (4-8) in a battle to get out of and stay out of the cellar. It is ironic that Utah has more conference victories than Cal, a CWS participant last year. It will take a sweep for the Golden Bears to reverse that this weekend.

OSU 2-1 I think the Beavs got back on track going 6-0 last week over OOC teams and will hand the Bruins a series loss
ASU 2-1 The Cardinal has lost its shine.
Ariz 2-1
Ore 2-1 Going to keep it this way today. If the ducks lose to Portland tomorrow, I may change this.
Cal 2-1 Hard picking this one. It is the most difficult series to pick as both teams have some real issues.
USC 0 Going to pick USC to win no games this weekend. To heck with the trojans.

you know oregon lost 1/3 of its starters.. this is the week they probably lose. Tessar is done as well. I like Housy, and he is proven, just taken a back seat right now.

this series is another trap. I would be surprised if we won 2. Well, with Keudell, and Reed these days, all the ducks need to do is scratch in a few runs. Those guys are pitching that well right now.

Laughing right now.. it finally takes a #8 ranking and everyone thinks the ducks will win now. I for one think this could be the path of failure, or taking it to the next level. Hope our front two starters don't feel burdened with having to shutout its opponent for the win. Yikes. I would say that is is probable that the Ducks have a 70% chance of losing this series. AJ, and Altobelli.. really hurts this team. They were the core. Thomas, Healy and Garlick have to go on a hot streak right now. Walker is a good hitter as well. He needs to get hot if we have a chance at all to continue with our success.

Not sure what it says about my team, but I could see them going 3-0 or 0-3 this weekend and not be totally surprised.

OSU 2-1
Stan 2-1
UW 2-1
Ore 2-1
Cal 2-1

A note for those interested in competing for the prediction championship. There are a handful of you who have missed three weeks already, and that means you must participate in all the remaining weeks to qualify. BeaverBeliever20 is the last one in this group who still has a chance, and he is near the top of the standings, but cannot miss this weekend. BB20, get yer picks in.

Rowdy, cswanson, borgguy: No more missed weeks for any of you.

Dam borguy! That just plain sucks. Here's to hoping a new, better job is right around the bend (or Monday) for you. Even though I picked Ariz to go 2-1, here to a sweep for y'all.

Pick analysis
  • A little difficult deciding which was the most lopsided this week, but I have to go with Cal over Utah 12/1 with 2 sweeps.
  • The close second is Oregon over Wazzu 11/2 with 4 sweeps.
  • Arizona over UW is third, 10/3 with 2 sweeps.
  • Still in the “decided favorite” category (but not overwhelmingly so), UCLA gets an 8/5 edge over OSU with 1 sweep.
  • And the closest series--by your votes—should be Stanford 7/6 over ASU, with both teams getting 1 sweep vote.
Borg, I cannot but feel somewhat responsible. If only I had kept my Pac-12 baseball interest to myself, Borg would still be paying taxes to support all those government employees sucking at the Beaver State's teat! Alas!

Seriously, though, sorry to hear that. Not a good time to be outa work. (Not that any time is good.) But it should get better as soon as the November election is over.

For Husky and Wildcat fans (do we have any?), or just Pac-12 or college baseball fans in general, UW provides free video of their baseball games, which is very cool. Wish more teams did that. It's a staitc view from behind home plate and poor quality video, but it's free so shut up and enjoy it.
