WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — UCLA junior center fielder Beau Amaral has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week and OREGON senior right-handed pitcher Alex Keudell has been named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for April 9-15, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.
Amaral went 9-for-18 (.500) with two triples, one double, six RBI and seven runs in UCLA’s four games against top-25 ranked teams last week, posting a .778 slugging percentage. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native went 2-for-3 with one run in a 4-2 win against then-No. 12 Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday. He also went 4-for-6 with two triples, four RBI and four runs in UCLA’s 15-3 win at then-No. 4 Arizona on Saturday. Amaral extended his hitting streak to a career-high 18 games on Sunday, going 2-for-5 with one double, two RBI and one run to help the then-No. 17 Bruins seal the series victory. His streak is the longest by a Bruin since Chris Jensen’s 18-game hitting streak in 2005.
This is Amaral’s third career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and the 55th all-time selection for UCLA. Amaral has received the weekly honor twice this season, with the first coming on March 26.
Keudell struck out a season-best seven batters, allowed just one run on five hits and walked no one in Oregon’s 4-2 victory over then-No. 6 Stanford on Friday. The senior also pitched an inning of relief against San Francisco on Tuesday, allowing an unearned run as the Ducks defeated the Dons, 4-1. The Portland, Ore., native is now 4-0 in his last four starts and has allowed just two runs (one earned) in his last 32 innings of work.
This is Keudell’s second career Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week selection and Oregon’s fifth all-time selection. Keudell joins the likes of former Pac-12 pitchers Trevor Bauer (UCLA), Tim Lincecum (Washington) and Mike Leake (ASU) as one of a select few Conference pitchers to earn the weekly honor in back-to-back weeks.
