WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — OREGON sophomore second baseman Aaron Payne has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week and ARIZONA STATE sophomore right-handed pitcher Trevor Williams has been named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for April 23-29, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.
Payne drove in five runs last week, including the game-winner against CALIFORNIA on Friday and Saturday. In Friday’s 4-1 win over the Golden Bears, Payne’s eight-inning sacrifice fly scored Brett Hambright to put Oregon up 2-1, providing the winning margin. On Saturday, the San Clemente, Calif., native smacked a two-out RBI single to break up a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning, delivering the 3-2 victory. On Sunday, Payne went 3-for-5 and drove in a career-best three runs as Oregon swept the series with a 7-1 win.
This is Payne’s first career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and the sixth all-time selection for Oregon. Payne is the second Duck to be named Player of the Week this season, as Brett Thomas earned the honor on April 9.
Williams threw a complete-game shutout at Washington State on Saturday, striking out four, walking none and giving up no runs on seven hits in Williams’ second complete game of the year. The San Diego, Calif., product threw 78 strikes out of 101 pitches in the 2-0 victory. Williams hasn’t walked a batter in 25 consecutive innings, dating back to April 6 against Oregon State. He now has eight wins on the season and sports a 1.94 ERA.
This is Williams’ first career Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week selection and Arizona State’s 61st all-time selection. Williams is the second Pitcher of the Week from ASU this season, as Brady Rodgers received the award on March 26.
