Week 14

Penultimate week of conference play...then rivalry weekend. Oregon, atop the standings with a magic number of 3 for at least a tie for the conference crown, has only Oregon State left next week in conference play. If Arizona sweeps this week, they will still need help from the Beavers in the Civil War if they want to avoid the tiebreaker with Oregon. If not, Oregon will earn its first Pac-12 title and probably its first ever national seed in the postseason.
  • OSU at WSU
  • UW at ASU
  • Ariz at USC
  • UCLA at Cal
  • Stan at Utah
  • Seattle (XS) at Ore
Week 14 Series
  • Oregon State faces its most often played opponent, long-time Pacific Northwest foe Washington State in the Palouse. The Beavers are just 192-225 against the Cougars, a .460 winning percentage. And even though Wazzu’s season will not extend past the Apple Cup next weekend, they are still a dangerous club, especially against fellow PNW teams. The Beavers are fighting for a still-possible regional hosting spot. They need to take their last two PNW series to have a chance.
  • Washington suffered a setback last weekend getting swept by UCLA. But they still have a reasonable shot at the postseason. Boyd says they need to go 7-1 to finish within the top 45 RPI. A road series win over ASU will go a long way toward helping their cause.
  • Arizona still has a shot at the conference title, but they need to sweep USC to get even with Oregon at 19-8. Then they will host in-state rival ASU in the final week. USC’s postseason hopes shriveled last week with a road sweep at Oregon’s hands. They would have to run the table to finish within the RPI 45.
  • UCLA plays another team whose postseason hopes ended last week. Cal also needs to win out--going 6-0 against two of the top teams in the country--just to finish within the top 45 RPI. UCLA is still in the running for a national seed. With Cal and SoCal left (plus a midweek game against Irvine), the Bruins’ fate is in their own hands.
  • Stanford visits SLC to take on the inutile Utes in Utah’s final home series and final conference series. Without a conference rival, the Utes will finish their inaugural Pac-12 season on the road in Bakersfield.
  • The nonconference series has 1st place Oregon hosting independent Seattle. There is little upside in this series for the Ducks, as the Redhawks are equivalent to Utah in terms of ranking, though their record is better (still a subpar 22-24). They can only lose ground in the national seed popularity sweepstakes if they don’t sweep. Will Coach Horton play this series as a tuneup for the Civil War next week?

WSU 2-1 - beavs almost got worked at utah. Time to get worked.
ASU 3-0 - devils pour it on.
USC 2-1 USC makes arizona look like chumps
Cal 2-1 Cal crushes the bruins
Utah 2-1 Utah makes stanford pay after outclassing the beavs and losing
ORE 3-0 Oregon cruises to an easy sweep, setting up only one win to take the title, due to Arizona, Stanford, OSU, UCLA implosion.
Wow- I could win the whole thing, but this dream is too cool. Letting it ride.

You're swinging for the fences, yet the only series you don't vote for a sweep is Oregon State over Wazzu? Whaaaaa?

Watch out for UW. Notice they pitched TWO of their starters against Portland yesterday. They're getting serious... desperate.

From OSU's webpages....
  • Pat Casey needs two wins to tie Jack Riley (613) for the most as the Beavers’ head coach.
  • OSU’s pitchers rank second in the Pac-12 with 158 strikeouts in league games. Oregon has 166 in three more league contests.
  • Michael Conforto is the lone Pac-12 player to rank in the top 10 in the league in average, home runs and RBI. Conforto is ninth in average (.354), tied for first in home runs (11) and first in RBI (63).
Looks pretty sure that Pat Casey will tie and break Jack Riley's win record this season. It's fitting that he will do it either against Wazzu, at Bailey-Brayton, or against the Ducks at Goss-Coleman. Maybe tie in Pullman and surpass in Corvallis.

The strikeout number was a bit of a surprise to me. Should be an interesting matchup when the Ducks come to Corvallis.

I don't know when the last time the Pac had a triple-crown winner, but this is probably the first time ever a Beaver is in contention for it. Conforto would have to go about 10 for 10 to come close to the batting average leader, who is about 30 pts ahead of him, and he is second in homers now, one back of the leader. But his RBI total (63) is 11 more than the next guy on the chart. He's tops in SLG (.608) , 8th in OBP, and 4th in total bases. And this is a freshman.

Duck fans: A nice article on AK-47 on the Pac-12 website. (Didn't realize that was his number. Was that intentional?)

DM, just to add to Conforto's portfolio, he was also selected to play for the US National Team this summer. Thanks for the excellent info.

Yeah, you learn something each day. Pretty cool he stayed. All of his old teammates that got drafted did what was right for them and the team. Crazy, I thought this team was going to end up like USC or Cal this year. Thanks for the post DM
