I know this board is supposed to be limited to baseball, but the D1 softball regionals are underway, and the Pac is almost fully represented once again. Eight of the nine teams are in (minus Utah). Six are hosting. Cal (#1) and ASU (#3) are national seeds.

Oregon is already 2-0 in the Eugene regional, which started yesterday. The bulk of the others start today.

Ouch. And it looks like Florida State got upset by SDSU in that regional. So UCLA has to beat the 2 seed in the loser's bracket in their own regional.

Oregon State scored 4 in the bottom of the 7th to tie it, then lost to Tulsa 9-7 in 11 innings.

#4 Florida, #6 Texas, and #7 Tennessee were all upset too.

Stanford, Cal, Washington, ASU, and Arizona all won. Pac is 7-2 so far.

Sorry, deviating further....

In Division III softball, looks like a Northwest Conference rematch--in the winner's bracket-between Linfield (McMinnville, OR) and Pacific Lutheran (Puyallup, WA) tomorrow. Linfield last year won its second Division III national championship in five seasons. They've already played PLU seven times this year and are 3-4 against the Lutes.

Ducks are 9-0 with white coaching, going to the 3rd straight super regional. This year has to be a CWS appearance. Be sweet if the BB team does it as well.

  • Ducks advance, 3-0.
  • Arizona, ASU, UW all are 2-0 in their respective regionals.
  • Cal, the #1 seed, was upset by Arkansas and with a 2-1 record has to beat them from the loser's bracket twice tomorrow to advance.
  • Oregon State and Stanford, on the road, are both 2-1 and must beat the host team twice tomorrow to advance.
  • UCLA gets bounced in their own regional, 0-2.
Overall, the Pac-12 is 15-5 so far.

The Oklahoma/Oregon State Game can be watched on the following link. Due to weather conditions, the game has been delayed.

Linfield lost the above game, but has battled through the loser's bracket and needs only to beat Montclair State tomorrow for yet another NWC rematch with PLU. If Linfield wins, the two rivals would play yet again Tuesday for the national championship.

Pac-12 softball after regional play:

Ariz 3-0 advanced
Ore 3-0 advanced
UW 3-0 advanced
Cal 4-1 advanced
ASU 3-1 advanced
OSU 2-2 eliminated
Stan 2-2 eliminated
UCLA 0-2 eliminated

TOTAL 20-8 (0.714)

Super regionals:
#16 UW at #1 Cal
#14 Arizona ar #4 Oklahoma
#14 Louisiana-Lafayette at #3 ASU
#11 Oregon at #6 Texas

The Pac-12 team is higher ranked and favored in only two of these five series, and one of them pairs up two Pac-12 teams, so the maximum that can advance is four. (At least one will.)

In Division III, Linfield did beat Montclair State to defend their title against conference rivals Pacific Lutheran, but the Lutes defeated the Wildcats 3-0 for their first national title. PLU was 6-3 against Linfield this year. If not for those six losses to PLU, Linfield would have been 46-1 this year. PLU finished 45-11.

RD and Ducks fans, looks like you have some good news with your softball team. They are up on Texas big in the 5th inning. If they win tonight, they are on to the World Series.

I'm watching that game right now, and Oregon was up 10-3 in the last inning. Their pitcher has given up three solo homers, and it's now 10-6. Two outs.

Arizona State and Oregon lose their first game in the super regionals, then take the next two to advance to the WCWS. Arizona gets knocked out 0-2 by Oklahoma.
Cal and Washington are playing each other now.

Cal blanks Washington twice to advance. Cal sits on the left bracket, and ASU and Oregon are on the right bracket and face each other in the first game. I don't remember, but I think losers at some point swap brackets in the women's CWS. At least they used to.

Well RD, the Ducks & Devils get to tangle 5/31! The Pac gets 3 teams in the final 8 for the CWS not bad. At least the Devil Ladys get a chance to take all the marbles. I don't normally follow softball, but hay why not.

CWS game 1 Oregon vs ASU- what a game ASU wins.. but only got 3 runs on 3 hits.. Oregon scored 1 in the top, and had 2nd and 3rd, no out. Line drive to third-caught, doubled up.. Ouch. That hurt

All three Pac-12 teams left are in elimination games today. ASU vs. LSU, and Oregon vs. Cal. I kind of expected Cal and ASU to be playing from the winner's side, but now they'll have to play through the loser's side for a chance to face each other.

Final Four

The top four national seeds are the last four standing, and they'll play one or two tomorrow to decide who makes the championship series.

On the upper bracket, #3 Arizona State has to beat #4 Oklahoma twice to advance to the championship series.
On the lower bracket, #1 California has to beat #2 Alabama twice to advance to the championship series.

Odds are stacked against the Pac-12 teams, but anything can happen in softball. However, this could be a rare year when a Pac-12 team does not win it all. (The Pac owns 24 of the 30 titles, including the last six. Of the six titles the Pac did not win, a Pac-12 team was the runner-up in four of those games. Pac-12 teams were also on the losing side of the championship 12 times that another Pac-12 team was on the winning side. )
