Thanks for the bit of research Matt. You sure couldn't tell by looking into the stands at PK park there are more than a couple hundred fans, expect those dancing on the Ducks dugout between innings.

I'm assuming those numbers are actual fans in the stands and not tickets sold?

Michael, do you know if this is paid attendance or those physically in attendance?

OpihiMan wrote:
Washington State doesn't register in the top 50 for attendance...Ducks are way way down this year...currently at 42nd in the nation (averaging 1,481 a game), Oregon State is 24th (averaging 2,608 a game).

Rain coat! I like it. I'm not sure, but I think a Ute is either some type of goat-like animal, or from the movie, "My Cousin Vinny," a youth.

Florida Beaver wrote:
Yeah...not sure how a bird became a tree. Also, pretty sure a Ute is not an animal. USC is a raincoat, so it fits well because they are pretty big ones.

Don't know why, but, maybe it's because I'm sitting in the outdoors watching nature at its best, but I got to thinking about the mascots in the Pac 12. Only two of the Pac 12 teams don't have animal mascots. Standford either has a color or a tree depending on how you view it (Cardinal or Tree). USC has a prophylactic as their mascot (Trojan).

Totally forgot about them Devils. Sorry Fred. Perhaps they qualify as a Tasmanian Devil?

Great observation DM. One would think that Cal, given their Ivy League-like mindset (what I really mean is liberal goofballs), could do better than the Bears. I'm sure some group such as PETA will eventually determine that the University is benefiting from the use of the name Bears or is mistreating its mascot and will demand a name change.

And some unimaginative thinking too: Bruins and Bears (same animal); Wildcats and Cougars (same animal). Reminds me of Canadian Football, where I think they once had two teams in the same league called the Blue Bombers. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

Thanks for starting the thread DM. Now, I'll never get all of my work done tonight. College Baseball and posting boards are addictive for me during this time of year.

FB, you are bringing out the best me. I don't know how I overlooked this last comment. I'm not so sure. I've heard that the Cal Bears are very anal in their world view.

It's been a long weekend. Obviously, a trip to Church didn't do me much good for my outlook today. I may need to go to evening services tonight. I love that God has a sense of humor. If not, I'm in trouble.

WOW, 6-0 Cardinal in the 4th. How many of you think it might be time for Marquis (spelling) to step down as Standford's head coach. It seems like he has had excellent talent, but can't seem to keep Standford in the really elite group of baseball teams.

What a great mascot name - Caribou. DM, I have this Blazing Saddle image of a bunch of Caribou or is it, Caribee (plural), sitting around the pipeline, warming themselves, and flatuating.

No, this is a freshman-laden team. They will be scary next year. Marquess is about as endangered and Wayne Graham and the pipeline-warmed caribou.

Question for Devil and Wildcat fans

Thanks for the info Matt. Now you have me researching the OSU/UO series history. It is a bit more challenging with UO dropping their program in the early 80s and resurrecting a few years ago.

I also sent a former coworker of mine an email to see how the rivalry was when he played. He played on the second to last team that the Ducks had before they dropped baseball.

Dodger Matt wrote:
Saw this statistic on the Devil website about the all-time record between the two schools:
ASU moved to 190-124 in the series against Arizona since 1959 and 213-240 all-time against the Wildcats…

  • So all-time Arizona holds a 240-213 advantage over ASU, a winning percentage of .530.
  • From 1959 to the present, ASU holds the advantage: 190-124 (.605).
That means that for who knows how long until 1959, Arizona had a record of 116-23 (.835) over ASU? What the hell was going on that for 140 games over however many years the schools existed ASU could only win 1 out of every 7 or 8 games played? And what was so magical about 1959? Did ASU finally start using nine players or something that year?
