Thanks for joining my good friend. Hatred for Clemson? Bah, I've got a world of respect for CU and Coach Leggett. I just typically call things as I see it!

North Carolina's wekeend rotation

Just got word from pitching coach Scott Forbes the Tar Heels will go with Chris Munnelly, Patrick Johnson, Mike Morin and Kent Emmanuel.

I like the idea of not starting Johnson to start the weekend, and saving him for Cal State Fullerton.

thoughts?

Curious to see the games people are looking forward to, and why.

For me, I've got my eyes on the Big East/Big Ten Challenge and the series I'll be at, #13 Stanford at #14 Rice.

Some North Carolina tidbits (2/16)

Kendall

I just swapped texts with North Carolina assistant coach Scott Forbes. Here are a few items to throw at you today:

1) Freshman catcher Matt Roberts, who was expected to get some significant playing time this weekend, will MISS opening weekend because of a hand injury. The Tar Heels are hoping to get him back in the mix next week.

2) Forbes and the Tar Heels are looking for big-time campaigns from Jesse Wierbicki and Jacob Stallings. They believe both are primed to take another step forward this season, which is scary particularly in Michael's case.

3) Overall, it's going to be an interesting year for the Tar Heels. They have four freshmen in the field, and will pitch mostly freshmen and sophomores on the mound with the exception of Patrick Johnson and Greg Holt.

My take? I think North Carolina will be improved at the plate and I think the pitching staff will again be solid. The biggest question mark for me is offensive power production, and can the Tar Heels get Patrick Johnson to have an ace-like campaign this season? Those are the big questions.

Quick Cal State Fullerton rotation note

Just swapped texts with Fullerton head coach Dave Serrano, who said the Titans will go like this throughout the weekend from a rotation standpoint:

Noe Ramirez vs. Long Beach State
Tyler Pill vs. North Carolina
Jake Floethe vs. Long Beach State
Colin O'Connell vs. Long Beach State

-- I'm very interested to see how Floethe looks this weekend. Though Jake didn't have great numbers at Fresno State, coach Serrano told me last season that Floethe was easily one of the best pitchers on the staff as he sat out for transfer reasons last season. The Titans will have a nasty, nasty staff (well, nastier, actually) if Floethe rises to the occasion.

Tigers,
The sky is the limit for Clemson this season, IF the pitching staff can rise to the occasion.

Offensively, I know some people thought they might take a step back after losing Mike Freeman and Kyle Parker from last year's team. I don't think so. The Tigers will have a solid lineup, and that middle of the order with Brad Miller, Jeff Schaus and John Hinson is just flat out nasty. I see Clemson being as good, or better offensively as it was last season.

Now, as for the pitching staff. I actually like the way the bullpen looks with the return of Will Lamb, David Haselden, Scott Firth and especially the return of reliever Alex Frederick, who was clutch down the stretch last season. The bullpen is A-OK, the issue is the pitching staff. CU has a talented staff that is good, it does not (as of right now) have a starter that is "elite". That needs to change to compete for the national title.

As usual, that series with South Carolina in a few weeks is going to be something else.

Any other questions? Thanks again for subscribing ... we're loving the fact you decided to join up.

Tim,
Welcome to the site .... Missouri is like the Arkansas of the Big 12. Every time you think the Tiger are going to have a down year, they're much better than expected. On paper, though, this would be T.J.'s best job done in a while if he can get to a regional with the returning staff and lineup he has.

I know he seemed a little concerned about the team when I saw him at the coaches convention, but also felt like the team had the right attitude.

Georgia tidbits: Sickness news and more

Kendall
Kendall

Hey all,
I touched base with Georgia coach Dave Perno this afternoon and we discussed several things including the health of junior catcher Joey Delmonico. Here are some notes:

* It is true that Joey Delmonico will miss opening weekend against Stetson with mononucleosis. The Bulldogs will miss the talented catcher for a couple of weeks, though Perno realizes that with mono you never know, so it could be up to a month they'll be without him.

* There's been a lot of hype about top prospect, outfielder Zach Cone, this spring. But keep a close eye on junior Chase Davidson. Perno feels like Davidson has the tools to be a special player, but things just haven't worked in his favor so far in his career. Interestingly, Davidson hit five homers in eight of UGA's preseason scrimmages.

* Another guy to watch is pitcher Michael Palazzone. He had high hopes entering college, but again, he's another guy that has yet to show his true potential. Perno thinks that can happen this season. Palazzone had an ERA over 8.00 last season. This season? Perno said he's much better, and has a much better slider with a solid cutter as a fourth pitch to go with a really good changeup.

* RHP Ben Cornwell is finally healthy and the Bulldogs will utilize him quite a bit this year, while LHP Alex Wood is a guy that not a lot of people know about, but a guy UGA believes will have a solid spring. He's a "surprise" candidate.

* Other pitchers to watch include RHP Taylor Maloof, RHP Earl Daniels and RHP Cecil Tanner. Maloof and Daniels are ready to take a step forward, while UGA has really tempered expectations with Tanner in an attempt to get him back on track.

That's all for now!

I don't really think the Tigers should think they can't win the national title this season. My personal feeling is they have a team capable of it if the pitching steps up. And you're right about Brady, he has the ability to be very very dominant, but has yet to show that. Is this the year? If so, the Tigers are in excellent shape.

As for Moorefield, he obviously didn't get much action last year, but he'll get more looks this year. Tigers could use a guy like him to have a good year.

Tigers Bia wrote:
I agree with the offense. Lamb, Miller, Schaus, Shaffer, Hinson is just dirty. KP was a big hitter for us but cooled off late in the season really for us.

Brady has a world of talent but just hasnt put it all together. Electric stuff, it would really help if he could strengthen the rotation. Leione has a good freshman campaign to go along with a good fb and slider but he needs to take a step forward to be the saturday guy. Scott Weismann was electric in the playoffs he will need to step up big to replace Casey Harman. If he would have came back I think the natl champ would be a realistic expectation.

Do you know anything about Joesph Moorefield? Big lefty who sits around low 90's with good offspeed stuff. Has been a little wild and not very composed but he looks to be in a solid role to contribute and could really bolster the back end of the pen.
