UCLA Cautiously Optimistic About Their Bullpen

Plutko definitely looked better then I had expected him to today. UCLA's pitching all weekend looked great. Combined 1 unearned.

Cole and Bauer have been throwing out of their minds. It's a shame they can't get any support from the bats. It'll be interesting to see if Plutko gets some help tomorrow.

UCLA is talented especially the Fri and Sat guys but across the board Fullerton is better...Pill just threw a 7 innings of 3 hits against USC. Now here comes Colin O'Connell for Sunday 1.29 no walks in 14 innings...and then Floethe 2.13 on Tuesday. Problem with UCLA NO OFFENSE at all...no room for pitchers mistakes 17 k's and a no decision...

Plutko has got a lower ERA then either Cole or Bauer. Vander Tuig, Weiss and Griggs have all looked solid as well. You cannot tell me Fullerton is better across the board pitching wise.

What stood out this weekend?

Kendall, you also have to shift a bit of that to the UCLA bats, which were scrutinized heavily even prior to the weekend series with Nebraska. The Huskers' pitching staff is to be applauded for a stellar weekend overall, but I think the more daunting question after the weekend is: Does UCLA really have any lineup that can help them reach Omaha with Cole/Bauer?!??

Agreed. Not taking anything away from Nebraska's performance on the mound, but the fact UCLA couldn't hit a beach ball has been evident through the first three weeks of the season. It's not the pitching that is shutting them down. The Bruin lineup would get embarrassed by Little League pitching.

What was Friday's biggest surprise?

Without a doubt the biggest surprise was UGA's seventh inning. The way Cole pitched up to that point and to see it unravel was pretty crazy.

What wasn't a surprise was watching UCLA waste bases loaded with no outs in the ninth.

Suspended for a trip to Hawaii? Now THAT is how you teach a lesson.

Clearly the biggest surprise was UCLA giving Gerrit Cole run support. And 8 at that. That never happens.

Somewhere between NC getting swept and UCLA finding an offense. Or OSU's weekend.

Slightly bias but I'm taking Trevor Bauer. The kid is a machine. 7-1, 1.47 ERA, .148 avg against, 110 strike outs in 9 games.

UCLA/Stanford could go one of about 6 different ways and I wouldn't be shocked.

UCLA 2-1 Between Cole and Plutko I have to believe UCLA can get two at home(I'm calling Bauer a sure win).
ASU 2-1
Cal 2-1
Ariz 2-1
WSU 3-0 (Needed to pick a sweep)

Gerrit Cole continues to get shelled on Friday nights. I don't know what is wrong but there was a time when a 4 run lead would have been the game. There's gotta be something going on.

BB20,
I hear ya on Cole, but look at your name! Oh ye of little faith. From the first few games, I have said our D is giving us these wins. Sammy pitched a good game, but had ZERO strike outs. The D gave our bats a chance. In many of our games we were behind after 3 innings. The Beavs confidence to play out of a hole this year is increidible. After looking at the way these guys played this game, I can almost believe that BA poll of #3 is true (Still not quite there, but if we take this series from UCLA at their house, yeah, I'm there)

Ain't this dam exciting?
edited by Florida Beaver on 4/29/2011

I had UCLA going 2-1 and was pretty sure this would be the one loss given the last few weeks, so I'm going to reserve judgment on the Beavers being #3 until at least tomorrow night. Let's see how they do against Bauer, who's been absolutely filthy all year.
Over/Under is 10 K's. I'm taking the over. They smack Bauer around and you can sign me up for the Beaver wagon.

This has been ridiculous. Bauer's getting 2 K's an inning(11 total). And Osich has got 7 of his own and no hits. It's only in the sixth. UCLA's started making contact but I still don't see how either of these guys is giving up a run anytime soon.

And I jinxed it. OSU up two. That just might do it.

Jinxed it? Are you a Bruin fan? Osich still has a no-hitter going through 7.

Why yes, yes I am. It's truly amazing how inept UCLA's bats can be. Rahmatulla needs to get cleared soon.

No hitter going into the 9th. Bauer's got 15 K's and is still in line for the loss. Osich has been amazing.

And there is the no hitter. Congrats to Osich and the Beavers, one hell of a game.
