2004 South Top Prospect Showcase
Garrett Self is a 5'11/190 2005 right handed hitting third baseman from Houston, TX, with good present strength throughout his body. He’s a hustling player who does everything full out on a baseball field. Self runs well and showed good agility at third base. He made one diving stop and throw at third base that was ESPN material and made another nice charging play on a swinging bunt. Self’s arm plays much better than the velocities off the mound and in the drills would dictate. At the plate, Self generates very good bat speed and showed good power potential in batting practice. He has some bat wrap behind his head that affected his ability to make contact against the hard stuff in games, but we’re guessing he drives the ball consistently with metal in his hand. Self also threw a couple of innings in relief, throwing strikes with an 81 mph fastball and tight 71 mph slurve while striking out four hitters. Garrett is a very good student.
