Carnley is a 6-1, 180 lb shortstop from Florida with a lean, athletic frame. Carnley is a very good athlete who does many things well as a position player. He ran 6.98 in the 60 on the wet slow track and we timed him down to first base in 4.31 from the right side. His best tool is his arm strength. Carnley threw 88 mph across the infield with a loose, easy arm stroke and 89 mph from the outfield. Carnley has some of the basic ingredients to hit but suffers from poor mechanics at the moment. He starts his swing with very low hands and ends up with a sweep type swing that does show some power to the alleys when he gets his hands out. We didn’t get any indication that Carnley pitches but that’s something we’d like to see. His athletic ability, frame and loose, quick arm all seem suited to the mound. Carnley could play shortstop at the college level for the right program but he might have a higher ceiling as a pitcher. Carnley is an excellent student.
