Deep arm action with over the top release point, some effort at release, threw numerous pitches at high 3/4's slot with positive effect. Warmed up at 91-92 mph, mostly high 80's with hitters, tends to muscle up in game situations and lose velocity, showed cut fastball for first time this outing, interesting pitch with some bite. Flashed hard downer spin on curveball but not consistent. Good student, signed with Iowa.

Calvin Mathews is a 2012 RHP with a 6-4 200 lb. frame from Bloomfield, IA who attends Davis County HS. Strong low waisted build, filling out nicely, athletic look. Well paced delivery, deep arm circle, over the top release point, has to clear head to get arm through, tends to warm up with lower arm angle than game release point with equally good stuff. Fastball steady at 88-90 mph, works downhill to the bottom of strike zone, mostly straight. Curveball has short downer bite/shape, slider effect at curveball speed, tends to overthrow change up. Works very quickly and pounds the strike zone at a machine like pace, will not walk hitters and rarely pitches behind. Good student, signed with Iowa.

Hides the ball well, not much effort, occassionally drifts, can simplify mechanics and approach for improvements. Flashed good hard spin on curveball, pitch shows a lot of potential. Developing changeup is a solid third pitch at present. Stood out in this event against high quality older competition, wasn't at all intimidated. Exciting prospect to keep an eye on. Fastball very consistent at 89-90 mph, touched 91, maintains velo from the stretch. Curveball shows hard downer spin at times, flashed sharp bite, some aptitude for a change up. Fills up the zone with fastball and curveball, works ahead. Top level pitching prospect who will get lots of professional attention. Good student, verbal commitment to Iowa.
