Daniel Gomez is a 2006 LHP/OF from Saddleback HS, residing in Santa Ana, CA, with a 5'9", 155 lb. frame. Though not big, he has an athletic build and has athleticism. Gomez has good body control and rhythm in his delivery, allowing good feel for the ball. He pitches from a high 3/4 slot and has a loose arm. His fastball (78-81) has natural arm side run and at times he showed very good command both in and out with the fastball. Gomez showed flashes of being able to pitch with his fastball alone. He also showed that he can change the shape of his curveball (67-73), varying it from a 1/7 type curveball to a harder one more reminiscent of a big slider. In any case, Gomez spins the breaking ball well, and with his loose arm, that is an indication that a harder and even sharper breaking ball is in his future. Like with his fastball, Gomez has good command of the curveball. He also showed flashes and feel of a plus change-up that he can turn over. In the second of his two outings he was much sharper and did a better job of mixing his pitches and showing good pitchability. He has all three pitches to be an effective mix pitcher and in that second outing he showed the ability make adjustments and a quick learning curve. Offensively Gomez has good hands for hitting. He has a nice path and some life and whip in swing, with good bat speed. In the outfield he sets up to the ball well and has a strong defensive approach. The ball exits his hand well and with his body control, Gomez is able to make accurate low arc throws. For some colleges Gomez should be a potential two-way player. His brightest future appears to be on the mound because his repertoire is good and he has a chance to develop plus pitchability.
