2005 California Top Prospect Showcase
Frank Rangel is 2006 LHP from Colton HS, residing in Colton, CA, with a 6'0", 175 lb. frame. He has a good pitcher's build. He pitches from an over the top slot with a shallow backside arm stroke, meaning his arm arc doesn't extend much deeper than his waist. From the top of his arm stroke his arm works quickly toward extension. Rangel has a compact delivery and understands how to use his front side for stability and leverage. A little more speed and rhythm in his delivery might allow for more arm speed throughout. He has good fastball command and stays down in the zone. Rangel's fastball (79-81) has some natural arm side run and he will occasionally mix in a BP fastball to keep hitters off balance. His curveball (71-73) has good spin and down plane, at times flashing plus action. His change-up (69-73) has some sink action. Rangel understands how to work in and out and generally knows what he wants to do on this hill. He has the ability to throw his curveball for strikes. At the plate he showed an aggressive swing, particularly to the pull side. He clears his hips early and his hands work. Rangel is a good follow due to his three pitch repertoire and grasp of pitching. Depending on the level of competition he is recruited to pitch at, he could range from a starter with a mix repertoire or a good situational lefty that is also capable of a spot start or long relief.
