1/23/12: Built with long, wiry strong limbs and a slender frame, Gausman was one of the most projectable pitchers coming out of high school in 2010 when he was selected in the sixth round of the draft by the Dodgers. He participated in the 2009 Aflac/Perfect Game All-American Classic the previous summer, where he showed good composure on the mound at a young age in addition to a fastball that peaked at 94. He now throws his fastball in the 93-95 range, routinely topping out at 96-97. Reports surfaced during the summer of 2010 when he pitched in the California Collegiate League that his fastball flirted with triple digits at times, which isn't that surprising given his size, stature and the ease of which he throws. With his long legs and high waist, Gausman can look a lot taller on the mound than his listed 6-foot-4 size, employing a big leg kick as part of his delivery out of the windup. He also uses his stature perfectly to throw on a downhill plane, and is particularly effective when he's commanding the bottom half of the strike zone with his fastball that has some late sinking and running life. His overhand 12-to-6 curveball shows good break when he throws it as well as he can, and the same can be said for his darting changeup, of which he throws with the same arm slot and speed as his fastball. He can also throw a slider, and seems to alternate between his two breaking balls from one appearance to the next. Last summer he took his talents to the Cape, where he was named the league's No. 4 prospect despite making only two starts for the league champion Harwich Mariners. After making two more starts for Team USA, where he was named the team's No. 3 prospect, LSU decided to shut him down for the rest of the summer after tossing 90 innings his freshman year. During his freshman campaign it didn't take long for Gausman to assume the role as the Tigers' Friday ace. While LSU had some big questions to answer regarding their pitching staff, Gausman eliminated at least one of those, and aptly handled a difficult SEC schedule by going 5-6 with a 3.51 ERA. He limited baserunners by allowing only 70 hits at a .215 clip against him, and showed good command of the strike zone by walking only 23 batters. Draft eligible as a sophomore, Gausman is poised for a big season as he continues to take the ball every Friday for the Tigers, and if he continues to progress as he has up to this point, he could be selected among the first three to five overall selections come June.

Kevin Gausman is a 2010 RHP with a 6'4'', 180 lb. frame from Centennial, CO who attends Grandview HS. Atletic lean pitcher's build, excellent physical projection. Very polished delivery, very good balance, arm works extremely well, hides ball in delivery, repeats. Velo comes easy, first warm up at 91, sits between 91-94 mph, good heaviness down in zone, can spot FB glove side with maturity. CB has hard spin/sharp bite at 72 mph, could add more velo, will shorten up CB break for soft SL, has feel for change. Very high ceiling talent. Early draft prospect. Aflac All-American.
