15u WWBA East Scout Notes: Day 5

Colton Olinger
15U WWBA East Scout Notes: Day 1 & 2 | Day 3 & 4

Sam Robertson (2023 Anniston, AL) is a long middle infielder with tons of projection left in his 6-1, 161 pound frame for Top Gun Brooks. Defensively he showed good athleticism with easy range moving in any direction. His ability to read the ball off the bat and take efficient routes allow him to get his feet in a good position as he sets up to field the ball. Once he gets to the ball Robertson displayed an arm that profiles to play anywhere in the infield. At the plate he showed a simple approach working short to the ball. His quick hands and long frame project well moving forward with plenty of room to add strength moving forward.

Carter Kimbrell (2023 Birmingham, AL) was lights out in his start for SBG Sox Prime 23 in their semi-final game. The righthander pounded all four quadrants of the zone with a fastball that sat 80-83 mph and topped out at 85 mph with arm side run at times from a high three-quarters arm slot. His ability to maintain his velocity allowed him to stay efficient throughout his seven innings of work. He also mixed in an upper 60’s curveball with 11-5 shape and some depth through the zone. His ability to land both pitches for strikes as he repeats his mechanics at a high rate allowed him to stay off the middle of the plate as he created weak contact allowing only two hits and nor runs. With a 5-11, 180 pound frame has some present strength in the lower half with room to continue to add.

Ethan Pulliam (2023 Starkville, MS) finished the tournament with a solid .333 batting average, but more impressively finished with a 1.117 slugging percentage as he racked up two triples and a double as he helped propel his SBG Sox Prime 23 to a championship at the 15U East WWBA Championships. In the championship game the Mississippi State commit came up with a big single as he drove in two runs with a line drive single to right field. His quick short stroke impacts the inside part of the ball nicely with present hand strength through the point of contact. His 6-0, 165 pound frame has good projection left in it with room to fill as he continues to grow and mature.

Duncan Mathews (2023 Flowood, MS) showcased great hands behind the plate with good feel for how to manipulate pitches on the edges of the zone. His ability to shift his weight around while staying athletic in his stance allows him to create the perception of strikes even if the pitch is a ball or two off the plate. These types of skills proved to be crucial as he helped his SBG Sox Prime 23 team win the tournament. At the plate, his bat got hot early and stayed hot throughout the tournament. He finished the tournament hitting over .400 as he showed the ability to work counts and get himself in hitter friendly situations where he can look for his pitch. His young athletic frame paired with his good feel and flexibility project well as his young frame has plenty of room to add strength as he continues to grow and mature.
