Ryan Van Amburg is a 2008 right hand hitting outfielder from Saint Francis HS, residing in Campbell, CA. He has a 6'3" 175 lb. frame and a lean, long, plus plus athletic body. There is some twitchiness in Van Amburg's movements and he could very well have a bright future ahead of him, though he needs some time to develop as a baseball player. Van Amburg is an elite defensive back on the football field and has not had the same reps and game experience as many of his baseball peers so he can appear somewhat raw at times. Offensively he has very good bat speed and the ball exits his bat well. His hands are very quick through the hitting zone and he will be able to generate more power than his swing might suggest. Van Amburg did display a nice oppo approach. His power is projectable and don't be surprised is he really comes on strong in the spring. He has good speed and is going go be able to put the pressure on the defense with gappers and balls down the line. Defensively Van Amburg has a slinging type arm action but does have some arm strength. He covers a lot of ground and does so with easy strides. His level of athleticism is high and extremely coachable. He flashed decent technique in approaching the ball so is not far away from putting it together. For now, consider Van Amburg a strong follow as a D1 prospect. He is clearly an athlete that will draw attention at a showcase or anytime he is on the baseball field. How football plays into his future is also something to figure out.
