College Top 25: April 22

Vincent Cervino      Craig Cozart
Well, here we go folks, we have one month left in the regular season and things continue to get more unpredictable on the national landscape. We are seeing some new clubs making statements out west and non-Power 5s on the east coast continuing to jockey for post-season host consideration. Meanwhile, the gauntlet of the regular season in Power 5 play blends the weekly standings and makes the Top-25 a difficult thing to predict.

No. 1 Texas A&M (35-5) holds on to the top spot this week as they once again lead the nation in wins and are only one game out of 1st place in the SEC West. Aggie’s left-handed sluggers, Braden Montgomery and Jace Laviolette, have now combined for 42 home runs and 120 RBI on the year. Still holding on to 1st place in that division, No. 2 Arkansas (34-6) continues to ride their stable of arms to series victories. Hagen Smith leads the way on the staff and is now (8-0) with 100 punch outs on the year. The Tennessee Volunteers (33-7) showed their toughness as they went into Lexington and won a gritty series against No. 8 Kentucky (32-7). Clemson (32-7) moves up one slot to No. 4 this week and holds a two-game lead in the ACC Atlantic Division. No. 5 Duke (29-11) has shown the knack for winning games in dramatic fashion as they did in Blacksburg last weekend to keep pace in the ACC Coastal.

No. 7 Wake Forest (26-13) continues their hot streak and won a pivotal series at home against No. 10 Florida State (31-8) and the Deacs move back into the Top-10. Vanderbilt (29-11) jumps up to No. 9 and sit (10-8) in league play. Our biggest mover of the week is No. 12 Coastal Carolina (27-12) who continues to win games without any major setbacks while those around them dropped series on the week. No. 18 Georgia (29-10) has been on the Top-25 radar for weeks now and finally makes their first appearance of the season after their series victory against Ole Miss. Oklahoma (24-14) has won 7-games in a row and return to No. 23 in this week’s poll as they ride a comfortable 3-game lead in the Big 12. Another new face this week is No. 24 UNC Wilmington (26-14) who for three consecutive weeks has defeated a ranked opponent in midweek play and sit atop the Coastal Athletic Association standings. Our last new entry for the week is No. 25 NC State (22-15) who has had a wildly unpredictable season but have won series the last two weekends against Clemson and UNC to remain 2 games out of the lead in the ACC Atlantic.
