HOUSTON – University of Houston head coach Todd Whitting always felt like right-handed pitcher Aaron Garza had something special about him.

The Cougars were excited when they signed Garza. They were especially pleased when the righty from down the road in Galveston, Texas, turned down overtures from the Toronto Blue Jays as a 10th-rounder in the 2011 Major League Baseball draft.

Though there have been some ups and downs in Garza’s collegiate career thus far, performances like the one he had against sizzling Texas Tech in a 9-0 route at the Houston College Classic is a big reason why he’s the Cougars’ Friday night starter, and suddenly is one of the rising righties in college baseball.

“He’s pretty good when he’s vanilla and competitive,” Whitting said. “He’s pretty good when he doesn’t walk a lot of guys and throws a lot of strikes. He wasn’t making mistakes in the strike zone today, and that’s something that has bitten him a little bit at times in the past.

“We wanted him to be the leader of our pitching staff, and he’s certainly accepted that role pretty well.”
