James Collects Trophies, Shows Talent

Lauren Nunez
Right handed pitcher Layne James recently competed in both the Arizona All-State Games and the PG Series Tour Championship (OPEN) with high quality performances.

Looking at his past two weekends, James completed the All-State Games with two titles: 13U Home Run Derby Champion and 13U MVPitcher. He also ended that event batting .500 and threw three innings of work with two hits and six strikeouts. In the PG Series Tour Championship, James has an even better performance in the box with a .667 batting average and an 1.838 OPS.

“Getting these awards means a lot because it shows how much work I gave into this tournament. But even with these awards, I still feel like I could improve a lot more throughout the summer like working on my pitching velos and throwing more strikes.”

James has some great outings behind him as he continues to play throughout the summer, but one goal he has at the top of his mind is making Team Arizona by the end of July.

“It would mean a lot to me to be able to go and show how Arizona plays baseball. With the confidence I have as a hard throwing pitcher and as a power hitter, I feel good about my chances. knowing there are a lot of good players just makes me push harder to prove I can be better.”

Putting his best self out there every game can be stressful for any player, but something James always tries to remember is having fun and remembering why he loves the game.

“I love to just go on the field and have fun. Remembering that I am doing this to some day live my dream of being an MLB player to follow the footsteps of my favorite player, Shohei Ohtani.”
