Weekend Preview

First and foremost congratulations are in order for Mike Martin who became the all-time leader in wins with 1,976 on Saturday night. It took extra innings to secure the feat, as Steven Wells hit a solo home run in the top of the 13th to break a 2-2 tie that lasted since the bottom of the eighth inning. Freshman C.J. Van Eyk picked up the win to move to 3-0 on the year by providing 6 1/3 innings of relief to secure the record-breaking achievement.

It turned out to be a rather tumultuous weekend on the college baseball landscape, as four new teams are welcomed to the Top 25 this week. Georgia swept Mizzou on the road to continue their successful season, Tennessee Tech continued their winning ways with a sweep over Belmont, Stetson got the best of Jacksonville in a rain-shortened two-game series and UConn finally forced their way in with a series win over Memphis.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, four teams ranked among the top 10 – Ole Miss, Arkansas, Texas Tech and UCLA – all suffered series losses. In matchups between Top 25-ranked opponents, Texas stole a key road series from Texas Tech while Minnesota swept Indiana at home. In addition, both Kentucky and Texas A&M lost winnable SEC series.

Despite the high volume of turnover the top three teams in the nation continue to separate themselves from the rest of the pack as Florida, Stanford and Oregon State all won their weekend series and as a result remain ranked 1-2-3.

Falling out of the rankings are Vanderbilt, who went 0-4 on the week losing a midweek contest to Louisville before getting swept by Auburn, Jacksonville, who traded places with Stetson, Oklahoma State, who lost their road series at Iowa in addition to a midweek contest against Oral Roberts, and Coastal Carolina, who lost a key Sun Belt series against Louisiana.
