14U WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2

A primary third baseman, Matthew Champion (2024, Fontana, Calif.) got the start for USA Prime Mountain where he threw two innings and while he wasn’t consistent with his release, there’s plenty to be intrigued by moving forward. It was the second appearance of the tournament for the 5-11, 170 pound Champion who continued to show a simple mechanical profile with a low effort release and plenty of quickness to his arm stroke. Up to 84 mph in this look, Champion works to a higher three-quarters release and when he’s on time with his delivery he showed sinking life down in the zone and occasional ride when elevating. As one could imagine with the life, Champion was able to induce plenty of weak contact while showing tight spin and 11-5 shape to his curveball in the low 70's, giving him a solid two pitch combo which one can project upon moving forward.
