Drew Nelson (2022, Troy, Ala.), a 6-foot, 190-pound left-handed pitcher, threw an absolute gem for 5 Star National 17U Black. He carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning with a three-pitch mix and dominated the zone with his repertoire. The Auburn commit moved the ball around the zone, mixing speeds and avoiding barrels while keeping his defense engaged with a 64% strike rate. Nelson sat 84-87 mph with the fastball, touching 90 mph, a slow, big breaker in the mid-60s and a changeup with depth around 75 mph. He added and subtracted on all three pitches, reading swings and inducing weak contact. He finished with five strikeouts and took a tough-luck loss with a 2-0 defeat to the Georgia Bombers 17U Marucci. He made only one mistake, a two-out triple in the bottom of the sixth inning to score two runs on only the second hit he allowed all night. Despite the loss, an outstanding performance on how to pitch and give your team a chance to win a game.
