The Cincinnati Spikes are through to Wednesday’s semifinals with a perfect 6-0 record, thanks in no small part to just how good AJ Ewing (2023, Springboro, Ohio) has been with the bat this week. A left-handed hitting infielder committed to Wright State, Ewing has 11 hits in 6 games this event for the Spikes, with a good bit of extra-base power mixed in. It’s a relaxed set at the plate, and while there’s some bar to the load, he actually does load his hands and separate, getting into a good launch spot and turning the barrel on plane and on time. He uses a whole-field approach and has extra-base pop in any direction, with the bat speed and physical upside necessary to project more over the fence power as he continues to physically mature. The upside of the hit tool is high end, and his peripheral tools are enough to be excited about the overall profile long term as well. Ewing is committed to Wright State, who continue to recruit extremely well class after class.

West Virginia-committed Jacob Brown (2023, Ann Arbor, Mich.) is a player we’ve seen a good bit of through his first couple prep years, and he’s done a nice job continuing to refine his athleticism as he grows into his long, projectable frame. The power from the right side of the plate has always been advanced compared to his class, and Brown has shown consistent progression in his swing, adding more and more hit tool to that raw power and becoming a more dangerous hitter in the process. He’s likely a third baseman long term, but has played short, corner outfield, and first base before with the potential of being a versatile piece at WVU, and the offensive upside is that of a middle-order power bat.
