17u UBC West Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2

Dean West (2023, Woodland Hills, Calif.) showed off the impressive offensive skill set. He features a lean frame with extreme athleticism. The swing is simple with little movement throughout, allowing him to find the barrel often. He has above-average bat speed with natural loft. It leads to frequent hard hit balls. West has plus speed that plays on the bases and in the outfield. It is the type of speed that makes fielders run and will steal bases often. In the outfield he showed the ability to get quality jumps and reads. Combined with the speed, he covers ground well in all directions. It is obvious why West is regarded as one of the top players in the state of California.

Ryan Ellis (2022, El Cajon, Calif.) showed an intriguing pitch mix with plenty of movement. The fastball sat 86-88 mph with cut action. He paired it with a curveball that sat 72-76 mph. The offering has 12-6 action with tight, late break. He is confident in offering and is willing to throw it early and often. Hitter struggled to pick it up, no matter how often he threw it. The ability to keep hitters off the balance and create movement on his pitches was impressive.
