Northwestern commit Zachary Selfon (2023, Mahwah, N.J.) banged two hits from the leadoff spot for Northeast Supreme 16U Black. There is good rhythm in the swing with a short and direct hand path and plenty of strength at he point of contact. He gets up to speed quickly and plays the game extremely hard. He can disrupt on the bases and create offensive opportunity. The shortstop is rangy with soft hands and a quick exchange on the infield. The IQ and polish stand out. Allen Hernandez (2023, Wallington, N.J.) hits behind Selfon in the four-hole. Hernandez connected on a long home run to help preserve a one-run victory in the opening round of pool play. It was a majestic three-run shot that showed the type of pure power that Hernandez should develop as he matures.

USA Prime National 16U got a big day from the top of the lineup. Nazzan Zanetello (2023, Florissant, Mo.) and Camden Bates (2023, Washington, Okla.) both notched two hits to help USA Prime to a win. Zanetello is a wiry young athlete that has tools across the board. He can play the middle of the field using his plus speed and athleticism to range in center field, while also showing defensive versatility on the infield in the past. The body still has plenty of projection remaining, though he tapped into some current pop blasting a home run during the contest. He barreled all three balls on Saturday. Bates is a gamer. He has very good rhythm in the hands and a true all-fields approach. It’s a simple set up allowing the right-handed hitter to use his excellent eye-hand coordination to spray hard line drives around the yard. He is high energy on both sides of the ball. The shortstop uses his quick feet effectively and has good instincts during the approach. This is the type of player you expect to play early at the next level.
