The top ranked left-hander in the ’22 class looked like his typical self during his first official start of the season as the PG All-American punched out eight hitters over five frames of one-run baseball. Ferris, signed with Ole Miss, has a long-known track record over the course of his amateur career with obvious physical jurisdiction to highlight the outstanding body control he possesses to pound the strike zone with frequency. The delivery features deception but did look off a bit with some different timing triggers and though the stuff was a little bit down from the end of last summer it was still plenty good. He threw 49 of 62 pitches for strikes, mostly fastballs in the 90-94 mph range with particularly adept command to the arm side. Ferris consistently worked ahead of hitters and used the breaker sparingly though he did flash a couple of plus hammers in the mid- to upper-70s. The starter-level strike throwing ability coupled with two potential plus pitches, and a usually good changeup that he didn’t show this evening, makes him a first round prospect. Throw in that he’s the staff ace for the No. 2 team in the country and he’ll be regularly flirting with the upper-90s and you have a pitching prospect that will be drawing huge crowds every time out.
